Ferry crossings?? (1 Viewer)

Motorhome virgins doing 10 weeks in Europe with 2 kids this summer as first trip! Very excited but.....(Are we mad???)

Just starting to get on the mission.... ferry crossings... trying to get as north as possible. From uk is Esbjerg the best option??

Really appreciate any feedback.

Depends on where you are heading out from
From my Home of Newcastle I can use DFDS to get to Holland, but to get to Esbjerg I would now need to go from Harwich.

Thanks so much for that, we are prepared to get as far north in uk so as to get to the most northern part of Europe in a ferry to start the trip.

Could you recommend any good sites at all??

We also live in the North and find P&O Hull to Rotterdam to be the cheapest crossing for us.
We book through the caravan club they give discounts if you travel on a weekend, with our 7 metre van and 2 adults it is approx £230 return trip.
We can get Dover to Calais for about £60 return but it costs £50 each wat to Dover in fuel so not a big saving. :thumb:

Started to look at Sylt, but Rotterdam seems like a good option!

We live in London but thought we'd like to travel north before we cross the water.

just curious ,,,what attracts you to go north in the uk , if you have never been overseas in you rv before , why not dover /dunquerque and nice trip north the other side ...much more exciting for the kids compared to boring old britain

If you live in London i wouldnt drive to hull to go back down to rotterdam id got to dover as not to far from you and can get crossings from about £60 return with norfolk line or if you shop at tesco use your vouchers for the tunnel. Im sure the drive on the other side would be better than driving north up the a1 and loads for the kids to see and im sure they will feel more like on holiday as in a different country i know mine does.

We did 4 weeks 2 years ago and would love to do 10 the only plans we made where the ferry crossings everything else was just as it happened.

Hi Mia Terry- I agree with the above post. If you live in London go from Calais there are lots of good sites in france.We use the Aires or Camping Cheques that we buy from the caravan club but these can only be used in low season

Hi

I'd suggest that you cross from Folkestone/Dover to Calais/Dunkerque and drive up north once on the continent it will be much easier, nicer, and a heck of a lot cheaper (cheaper fuel and a much cheaper crossing). We actually live near Hull and always travel down to Dover to make the crossing (5-6 hour trip) as the prices 'up north' are crazy by comparison.

We go on Eurotunnel now as we can use our Tesco vouchers for Eurotunnel deals (4 x face value) so usually our return crossing only costs us £35 in Tesco vouchers. As we have dogs it is much better for them too as they get upset in the hold of the ship - our little Patterdale hasn't recovered from the trip we took on the ferry in August last year which was a last minute booking (the day before!) so there wasn't time to change our Tesco vouchers for Eurotunnel ones. Won't do it again though, not worth it for the poor little soul who was petrified.

Just a thought (well several really) inspired by your apparent desire to go to Esjberg...
A couple of years ago we holidayed in Sweden with the MH and we went from Harwich to Esjberg. We live in North Devon, so it was quite a haul to Harwich - we overnighted in Oxford. However on our return we crossed into Denmark from Malmo to Copenhagen and after spending a few days there we explored a bit of Storstrom which are the southern islands. There is a ferry which runs from Rodby to Puttgarten in Germany. Why not take a cheap ferry to Dunkerque. Have a look at Bruges, Antwerp, Amsterdam then up through North Holland and take the causeway that goes across to Friesland, Groningen, Oldenberg, under the Weser south of Nordenham, or over it to Sandstedt, then over the Elbe at Altendorf then up through Schleswig Holstein to Puttgarten. Hop on the Ferry and you're in Denmark. If you take your time there'll be loads to see, depending on your interests and the kids tastes. The route above avoids Bremen and Hamburg, but if they float your boat then why not.
Copenhagen is well worth a look (Tivoli Gardens for one) and Denmark has some great beaches. Cycling is a passion there and their cycle lane system is unbeatable.

Of course Denmark might not be your destination in which case a lot of the above may be irrelevant, but no matter. Whatever you do you have to enjoy it; it's a requirment of being a member of MH Fun.

As I am a Dane, we have been to Denmark in the motorhome (and car too) and the trip from Calais to the Danish/German border at Flensburg can be done in less than 1 day (not sure exactly as we stopped in various German cities/towns on the way to and from Denmark when we went there with the motorhome) and if you want to go to Sweden or Norway from Denmark it is possible to drive across the 3 bridges (2 toll bridges) or take a ferry from northern Denmark to either Sweden or Norway.

Hamburg and Bremen can be a pain with queues as JayDee says, but that is mainly in the rush hours, outside that there should not be any problems.

Well you buck the trend. Most of us head south for some warmth to thaw us out after the miserable UK winters. We'll all enjoy a report when you get back. FUN does a nice log book to record your travels logically and a check list to help you pack everything you need and if you want the full house, a good guide on security when travelling from The Boss who is a bit of an expert in this.
