Hi all,
Off to Peniscola tomorrow (no laughing in the cheap seats), and could do with some advise on a good campsite or aires for a couple of days. Walking distance would be best ,unless the parking is ok in town.
Cheers in advance.

Eden campsite is close and a stones throw from the beach, also a couple of Aires close by. If you want a long walk then stop in Benicarlo and walk all along the front to the castle. The castle is well worth seeing and the views from the top are good.

This Aire is about half an hour walk from the town centre, it's cheap, I think about €6/night. But no chairs are allowed, strictly parking only.

A few good wildcamp spots in the area too much quieter and peaceful than the very busy cramped aires I saw in the area.
Easy free parking in town right at foot of the castle which is stunning with great views

For those of a "certain age", This was where Sophia Loren, :Ddraped herself all over the Castle ramparts in El Cid.;) (Nurse!, screens!, he`s off again, I said that medication wasn't strong enough!):giggle:

BTW. I "got away" with driving round the old town citadel, back in 2003. I reckon I was lucky, your not supposed to, (locals only), I only found out AFTER I had done it!.

The castle is still called 'Papa Luna', for years I thought it was because of the white crescent shape of the promontory when viewed from a distance, only recently found out the real reason.......what a marvellous investigative tool the internet and search engines are.

When you go to the castle there are statues etc all to Papa Luna the one by the entrance to the castle is rubbed shiny by all the pilgrims and kids going for their selfies
Inside there's lots of references to him

The castle was used for a couple of scenes in GOT too apparently Oh yes the disabled get in Free show your Blue badge for the ticket but it's a seriously non wheelchair friendly place took me hours to get round and days to recover from all thosesteps

We stayed there in January, €6.30 for 24 hours, thought it was very good value. Also liked the 2km walk into the old town past Camping Eden which is about 1km from town. While we were there the people next to us had chairs out, but no awning. We loved the place, and the castle is definitely worth the €5 entrance fee. Great to see English sub-titles or English spoken in the displays and short films. Also enjoyed walking along the harbour wall with gulls and cormorants responding to the klaxon announcing every fishing boat's arrival in the harbour around 4pm.

Parking in the area is free as all the parking machines are locked up. Weather today as stated above but forecast to climb from tomorrow onwards. The worst of the wether is now behind us imo and the shorts and singlets will soon be coming out to play.

Whatever you do, avoid Spa Natura campsite. It is total sh*te and you are very likely to damage your van getting in and out to boot.
Peniscola is a nice old town, but we couldn't get out of the campsite soon enough.
