Portsmouth StMalo 29th July 12th August. Feel like the van is neglected so catching up.
Any suggestions of where to go would be most welcome.
Intention this year was a cruise so after the ferry we have £3200 to play with

With money on the hip we always chose city breaks. Always so many great ways to have fun and spend it. Europe has some of the finest cities in the world, all the big ones are obvious choices, Paris, Lisbon. Rome, and a big favourite of mine, Berlin. But there are so many more cities you could choose a week each in. Such as Florence, Marseille, Seville etc. City exploring is fun, you’re guaranteed to come home well fed, knackered and skint. (y)

Have to agree with @Jim regarding city breaks and along with the suggestions we've also done Istanbul and Budapest (for the Christmas Markets ) and found them totally satisfying and memorable. We've also done Amsterdam, Rome, Brussels, Bruges, Lisbon and Rio de Janerio (on a cruise 5 days in Rio)

Agree that Berlin is an excellent city break. We enjoyed a 4 night stay in Prague a few years ago, good value for money. Also a big tick for Dubrovnik.Enjoy the choosing

Have you been to Puy Du Fou near cholet. It's "Frances best kept secret". Don't expect to do it in one day. They have a huge aire. If you can, time it so you can go to the 'cinescenie' show one evening. Booking tickets online gets the best prices.

I’d have a leisurely drive around staying at a few lovely places and have enough money left over to do it again several times Over ....(y)

Hi Andy

Last time we used that route it got to £580 return, then we discovered the tunnel, at about 320 miles from Calais to St Malo it seemed a no brainer via toll roads

St Malo itself is worth a look, nice walled place with lovely buildings and a very good campsite not far out of the center (sorry cannot remember name)

Well done Techno, on top of the £3200 saving on the basic cost of the cruise, you have probably saved much, more, on the on board options that one tends to have to spend, such as day sight seeing trips from the ship, Bar Bill, & soft drinks outside of dining times. I think our last bill many years back, for extras was £350 for a 10 day med cruise and that was steering well clear of the on board casino!
Plus all those "must have" new clothes & shoes for the OH!:eek::eek:

Well landing St Malo question is are you on the overnight boat? If so head for Mont Saint Michel, you'll be off the boat circa 8:30 and you can park in the ample carparks (one reserved for campers) and get the free bus in to the Mont Saint Michel. It is an instructive and wonderful way to spend a day.

You can stop-over and drive on toward Cap Finistere, there's loads of villages beaches and sights to see, your trip should include Dinan Roscoff and many more.

There's plenty of aires but in July & August it's good to arrive before 1600Hrs. There's load of campsites to, if you prefer fixed facilities.

I would include Quimper, Concarneau, Pont-Aven and Port Louis (Tuesday night market) on your trip.

Excellent aires in Port Louis, let me know when you're arriving and I'll reserve a slot.

That the first 10 days covered, If you have any more I'd include Bayeux and the Normandy beaches.

If you've been lucky and fixed the night boat return, you can park up in the BF arrivals at St Malo 6 hours before the boat, and walk into town for aan afternoon sightseeing before the trip home...

Enjoy

Love St Malo, ferry gets you there around 08:15 so good for travelling further or great site 100 yards away(as the birds fly) but couple of kilometers drive around the bay to cracking municipal site -La Cite-D'alet - N48deg38.174', W2deg1.656'. Either on arrival or when you return - get a place on the top of this site - superb views and short walk around the bay to the old Walled City. Great restaurants and even Fish and Chips we had here last year:

Not wishing to "hijack" the thread, but anyone suggest an itinerary to see the "D" day beaches and the war graves?. Bearing in mind one person has to do any "walking" on a mobility scooter.? SWMBO had two uncles who went over, My uncle was lost after Dunkirk from a disease picked up on the beaches (Weil`s we think)

Try looking at aires and campsites along route and check them out on google maps might help with decision where to stop

Just another thought, I presume you land on the 13th July. If so a bit of internet searching on whereever you decide to go to will get you 2 parties on 13th and 14th for Bastille celebrations

Still planning 2-3 months in the mh though.
I have told SWMBO that one cruise a year is enough. :banghead:

There is so much to see in that area, just wander about and enjoy it all. Puy de Fou is excellent though it's no longer a secret. Shall go again. quite soon.

Try this from Vicarious Books Pete. We bought it a couple of years ago but have yet to do the tour. A snip at £6.
