I wasn't sure how well the batteries were doing and if I had a dud or not so the batteries were disconnected and brought inside. For anyone interested here are my test results.

Do these recovery figures seem about right?

His Sandra. . Nice one. ..
I' going to say that' not bad.. you will have been drawing close to 5 amps a little less but all the batteries have recovered..
That load for another 4/5 hours should see the batteries at about 50 % capacity if they are in good order..

David you may be right.. but in the real world I think we expect more of our batteries than they can give in theory...
Hence my comments.. I certainly wouldn' be ditching them if they were mine:LOL:

I will have a look in my folder for the receipt of Numax. I cant remember how much the banners were but not cheap. Left the receipt in last van. We had just bought the banners then decided to sell the van so took them out. The van we bought had just been fitted with the Numax thats why they aren't all the same.

I tried to look up the spec for both batteries and whilst Banner (assuming this is the 95751 lead acid one (100 Ah not 110Ah)) stated 200 Cycles @50% DOD, I could find nothing for the Numax (XV31MF) other than the CCA (A requirement covered by BS EN 50342:2001 for starter batteries). So, unable to establish what the life expectancy of the Numax batteries are. On the plus side both weigh the same 24KG indicating they have the same amount of lead in them which is a key aspect of battery performance. Any difference between them (2x110 AH & 2 x 100 AH plus and cycle and DOD difference) will be equalised when connected together anyway. Plenty of life left in these boys yet me thinks.

I removed my Banner Starting Bull battery labelled - 595 33, 12v, 95Ah,740A (EN) from my vehicle three weeks ago. Went to check on it at the storage compound and couldn't even get the remote to unlock drivers door. Anyway, removed battery and brought it home to fully charge and noted settled voltage after five hours was 13.07v. Left the battery unconnected to anything for past 20 days and voltage has dropped to 12.56v. That's a voltage drop of half a volt in nearly three weeks, if I've read the meter correctly. I bought the 2013 PVC last October and have no idea if this is the original battery or not. No information on battery labels regarding year of manufacture or guarantee apart from the information indicated above. At this stage I have not carried out a parasitic draw test to see if there is an issue but wanted to see if there was a significant battery voltage drop before I do that. Incidentally, if I do decide to buy a new battery it will be a Varta or something similar but, need to to do the draw test first and get it back to Don Amott, under warranty, and let them sort out any issues. The question I would like to ask is - are the voltage/time lapsed numbers looking ok or not though?

I'e got a numax LV 25MF 100Ah battery thats around 2 yrs old but not been used in van for more than 3 months..
Here' The results of the load tests I did on it just as a comparison and an e.g. of what you might expect from a good battery..

After fully charging and resting overnight the terminal no load voltage was just over 13v..
When a 5A load was applied the voltage drops quickly to around 12.4 v
And gradually over nearly 11 hrs at around a 5 amp load the voltage dropped to 11.82v

When the load was removed the voltage recovered very quickly to 12.03v and the final resting voltage after 7/8 hrs was12.16 v

To fully recharge the battery took about 13/14 hrs
The resting voltage after 24 hrs was just over 13 v...
That was around 2 wks ago and I've just checked the voltage now... it' still sitting at 13v..

Blimey Andy, that was quick. Thanks

My resting voltage after 14 days was 12.63. No load applied. Can I assume that I need to apply a certain load, over a period of time and see what the recovery rate is?

Yes.. the only way to really see what capacity the battery has is to load test it...
A 60w headlamp bulb gives a 5A load approx and that will be around the 20 hr rate they use to state the ah capacity of a battery so to me that' an ideal load to use to check it..

Don' worry to much about your resting voltage... it seems to vary depending on what type of lead acid battery you have..ie flooded... AGM.... or gel...
Andy

Remember I'm on about leisure batteries...
If you are checking a start battery get it load tested using an appropriate tester to check it' condition..

Yes, it is a starter battery. Do I need to either do a voltage drop test or get it done elsewhere?
Most accessories shops or garages should have the gear to correctly test the start battery...
It' quite often not black and white and if she starts easily a battery in poor condition would get you through a summer... but come the cold it will let you down...
You only have to see the threads on here every winter

As their is no international or national standard in place for a leisure battery how is one tested to determine if fit for purpose????

its fit for purpose if it does what you require of it I suppose... the tests Sandra did and the sort of test I outlined give you an idea thats all...
if your requirements are different or greater you spend more money on better quality batteries...

Andy, can you look at these numbers for me taken from a Lucas XV Supreme 110Ah Leisure battery that is at least 7 years old. It is from my caravanning days and has been on a smart charger since 2013. I know it's old but, it looks good to me.
Fully charged 13.54v. Unloaded rested voltage after thirty one hours 12.98v. Applied 4.5 amp load for 7 hours and reading 12.36v. Rested for 9 hours and recovered to 12.64v and remaining steady.

Hi Mike, those figures don't look bad at all..
It' taken a realistic load for a few hours and recovered well...
I'd say there is a good bit life in that despite it age...
I suppose the keeping it fully charged is the key...
Andy.
