Researching purchase of rv to use and store over our 10 year visa we just obtained.Whilst doing this the wife asks " Does everyone use campsites or do they wildcamp and use European style aires. If mainly campsites then get a newish caravan and car for similar dollars to a older rv with toad "
I dont know the answer to that .
My heart says rv but seems possible to get new caravan and newish car with warranty against much older rv and toad .
Moving to the dark side is cheaper ?

Fifth Wheeler or Trailer with slide outs are an option otherwise toad on RV.
On our RV rental trips we used sites so we got hook up , water, dump and frequently a pool all in the price.

We mainly stayed in Walmart car parks, but sometimes used Forestry campsites or ones that are known as The Army Corp. of Engineering, (ACE -www.recreation.gov) usually next to dams or major works done by the army, a LOT cheaper than KAO, a bit more basic, but sometimes you only need to dry camp.

US trailers are fitted out much the same as RVs fifth wheels etc with city water connection , hook up, tv, wi fi, and waste dump valves and sites are normally set up to provide fully serviced pitches but it will cost in comparison to off site camping.

And nearly weigh as much.
Average caravan weight is around 2500 > 3500kg and maybe 30ft long.
You won't be towing that with a family car.

Over there no problem hitch up to a chunky suv or similar.

Its that "off site" bit that interests us.What off site options are there .If someone was ,say, 100 days touring would they spend 90% on sites ?
Its what the average time spent using campsites that determine the caravan option over rv.

We own a motorhome in USA which we store in outer Los Angeles. We have used a mixture of RV parks, National & State Forest campsites and 'wild camping' in USA, Canada and Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Our blog www.ozerv.com has examples of each and some associated pricing.

I have posted on this before somewhere. But. We had the Winnebago for some 5 years, stored at Camping world Houston. And toured large parts of the USA. KOA`s are fully serviced, usually most secure, but not Cheap, however worth watching out for "specials". We used a lot of sites in the "Good Sam" book, which usually got a 10% or more discount, Another good Guide is "Passport America". Cost about $40, many places are up to 50% cheaper at certain times, especially midweek.

Online searches, will get you info on "boondocking" (wildcamp) sites. Walmart actively encourage overnighting on many of their Mall`s, and often have a security patrol through the night too. But you have to be a bit wary of locations, Suburban and Small Town are largely OK. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sites are online too. State Parks are another source and have varying facilities, from just a pitch to Full hookup. BTW "full hookup" will usually include Power, Water and Sewer on the pitch, and maybe even "cable" TV?. Another one to watch are Casino`s, Especially where they are run by the Native Americans, Often security patrolled, and sometimes a hookup (Even Free), whilst they Hope you Gamble, you are not pressured to do so. The one In Las Vegas (not far from Freemont St) is (was) $14p/n Full Hookup. And the bus uptown to the "strip" is cheap with a day rider ticket, hop on and off all day. We have also stayed in the car-park at the L-V Hilton after we saw concert there, Parked alongside Kenny Rogers Tour bus!. SWMBO was impressed!.

I had the advantage of Family near Houston, so I kept the (Toad) Truck with them, the grandson learned to drive in it and used it for school in the last year when we were not there!, Granddaughter now uses it!.
