Towbar fitting on a Fiat chassis 1997 - 2002 (1 Viewer)

Can anyone with a towbar on a Fiat chassis 1997 - 2002 tell me how the ends of their towbar are fitted to the chassis please?
The overhang would be around four feet.

It will depend if the chassis is a Ducato van base or extended Alko base.

Some tow bars are based on the Ducato standard towbar, with towball extensions (Short M/homes like Rapido 709s)

Others I dont know

mine is a 2001 ducato, alko chassis kontiki 640L

the bar is home made but I'll try to describe it.

the main towbar is 3" box steel and at the rear of the chassis (just in front of the rear body skirt) i fitted two large 10mm thick plates about 12" square which hang down just below the skirt.
these were fitted to the original holes in the chassis with nuts, bolts and shakeproof washers....never drill an alko chassis or allow anyone else to if fitting a towbar etc...

the box section was then lined up with these plates and then measured and marked for reference and the whole lot removed, re-aligned and welded together.

the completed bar sits about 1/2" below the rear skirt, which is about the right height (top of ball 16" or so above ground) and the ball is about 3" behind the skirt.

the distance from the skirt to the rear of the mounting plates is about 14".

yes....as yet there is no type approval on vans for towbars but it is in the pipeline:Sad:

Pappajohn I'm also interested in this towbar, so please add photos if you can - mine is a 1995 Hymer B544 on the standard Ducato chassis. I've been thinking about a ftted bar to attach a bike rack; lower than rear wall mounted ones and hence easier lifting.

mine will be different to yours as mines an Alko extended chassis, not fiats own.
principles the same though.

still too wet to crawl under the van but as soon as i can i'll do it. :thumb:

towbar photos as requested...

you'll have to imagine the outer view as the steadies were removed when i fitted the mountings.
the plate is both bolted and welded to the towbar frame but only bolted to the chassis.
rear bolt on outside view is behind the steady bracket
the bolts in the chassis are through existing pre-drilled holes

Yes at the moment as P/JOHN says i had mine made for me and you would not know the difference very pro looking.:thumb:

pappajohn - good photos of the tow bar thanks -but how thick is the box section material- did you use anti- crush tubes in the box section at the bolt points

Hi very new to all this.

I am looking to buy a CI Eliot 10 capucine 6 place, this name may sound a bit a odd but is the name of it here in france.
Does anyone know if it the same name in the UK or what the model name would be?
Does anyone know if this vehicle can be fitted with a towbar?
Or do I have to get one fabricated myself?

it is based on a fiat ducato 2.3, If I cannot get a ready made one can anyone recommend a fabrication place?

Sorry to join this late, but it's only just appeared on the main forum.

I've just finished a week of dodging between snow and rain showers to cut the Tow frame off my 2003 Ducato. I'm thinking of selling it to the Forth Bridge folk as spares, it's that massive!

Over the last seven years everything has become so rusted, and you can't get at the nuts with anything that will shift them (impact drive from compressor) or angle grinder that I had to cut it free of the arms, and remove them separately.

At least, we'll have a bit of weight tolerance for a few bottle i! Weight was around 30 kilos, perhaps more!!
