Hi,

I've just received my insurance and breakdown renewals from SAGA.
I'd always thought there were no size restrictions, but BEWARE - there are now at 7m x 3m x 2.25m.
I queried this on the 'phone as an enclosed sales flyer still quoted no age or dimension restrictions ! (We are 7.5m with the bikes 'on'.) They checked with their Underwriting Dept and I was told I wouldn't be covered as she wouldn't go on the low loader.
I suppose I could take the breakdown insurance (the main insurance is very competitive) and if the worst came to the worst, put the bikes inside and fold up the bike rack. The alternative is another provider, but they all seem either very expensive or have size restrictions. OR, go down the ADAC route, which seems a bit complex.
Any thoughts anyone ?

Got my Breakdown Insurance through the post this morning.

It is with Lifesure Group Ltd, cost £65 for both UK and European cover. Vehicle Dimensions are up to L8m x H3.5m x W2.5m. Max weigt limit is 4250Kgs.

I took the Level 1 cover which gives us 90 days European Cover in total with any one trip not exceeding 31 days. this level suits our own personnel needs however they do several Levels up to 180 consecutive days out of an annual total of 270 days. Don't know the cost of the higher cover levels though.

I appreciate you can pay too much for insurance but some of those quotes sound a little too low. Search for some of these companies on the net and see what you come up with. I tried one of the companies (low premium) offered by one of the clubs and quite a few had problems when trying to claim

Hi, I know you mentioned ADAC, we have gone with them and SAGA just for the insurance, I feel its really good value and well worth the time and trouble to pursue ADAC, as it covers all of your vehicles not just the motorhome so no need for any additional breakdown cover for your other vehicles, it covers a lot more countries than just the EEC and if you take out the plus there are a lot of additional benefits, like repatriation by air ambulance etc for medical conditions, its really worth exploring what is on offer for a very competitive price.

 Just contacted Barnie at www.2getherinsurance.com and he has quoted £260 for myself and two named drivers. Breakdown cover is £65 for uk / europe, but only upto 23 feet. My motorhome is 27 feet. He is going to check to see if he can get breakdown cover for my vehicle. (£250 excess) Excellent deal

My motorhome insurance / breakdown cover was double this amount through Safeguard last year.

Has anybody else had any dealing with this company.

Kind Regards

Hi

I have used this broker for many years for my 4x4 insurance & breakdown cover. Always competetive quote and good guys to talk to. However I have yet to make a claim although that would be down to the actual insurance co.

Hi Jim,

Spurred into action by your post (I am insured with Saga for insurance & breakdown) I rang them today to confirm if there is any limit on length as my M/H is 7.7m long.

They assured me that there was no limit on length for breakdown cover. Even checked with superiors.

I am going to write to them now to get it confirmed (or not) in writing :thumb:

Hi,

Just checked the SAGA web site and found the link below direct to the Motorhome Breakdown Conditions for policies on or after 1st November 2009. Which from a quick scan do not appear to have any restrictions as long as the vehicle is a registered motorhome in the UK, have a read see if you can find any exclusions as I couldn't, hope that helps

Link Removed

Its worth noting that they have different conditions for car breakdown assistance and 2 levels of Breakdown assistance for motorhomes (Assistance Plus)

This is a link to all of the insurance policy documents

Hi,

Thanks again for alll posts.

MrJinks - Sounds as if SAGA don't quite know what they're doing; the operator checked with her supervisor and then with their Underwriting Dept. and came back with the 7m limit. 'Wouldn't go on the low loader'.
Will talk to them again and request 'in writing' if I get an OK this time.

Hi,

Have just rung SAGA again - the change re. dimensions is on all breakdown NEW policies. Don't know what 'NEW' means, but the leaflet stating the sizes is dated August 2009.
Anyway, have now rung Comfort who have quoted no dimensions, trip length etc. for £10 more than Saga and £200 excess as opposed to £150 on the ordinary policy. Still, will probably take the whole lot from them and only have to deal with one company.

Incidentally, when I mentioned the Saga change, the Comfort guy said he'd heard that'd hit the forums big-time. Just goes to show the power of 'Motorhomefun.co.uk' !

Thanks, everyone,
Jim T

Odd to say the least.. I have just has this reply when I asked SAGA about the recovery size

I am writing to confirm we do not have any restrictions regarding the size of the motorhome, as long as the motorhome has been privately registered in the UK.

Hi,

That seems to be confirmed in the documents I have linked to above, and from their web site it appears these are the conditions from the 1st Nov 2009 unless there is something I have missed.

Perhaps "Burstnerite" could tell us the name of the person they spoke to as then we could perhaps get the confusion cleared up, as it does seem very strange that their web site has a copy of the 1st Nov 09 onwards conditions which do not appear to have any qualification, and support the answer you have received.

Hi,

I'm afraid I have no SAGA names. The leaflet indicating sizes was dated August 2009 and the operator intimated this signalled the change. If you have a policy effective prior to this, I assume you're ok.
However, as I said above, they sent me a contradictory FAQ leaflet staing NO size or age restrictions, with the renewal.

Perhaps it was the drivers age or dimensions that were not restricted not the motor home.:ROFLMAO:

I found this years ago and now use either safeguard or caravan guard , with these two its all in with the cost , never looked back since , good luck .
