Motorhome importing insurance (1 Viewer)

I’ve just had an interesting conversation with comfort insurance, they refuse to insure a motorhome I’m personally importing from Germany. They refuse to insure it on a chassis number unless it’s imported by a dealer and claim this has been the case for over 18 months. Advance insurance will provide cover.
Comments please (apart from the obvious one to go with advance ! )

try Safeguard.
they insured me in the UK on the VIN only in Jan 17 until I got the van registered.
I think the Safeguard premium was a bit steep, but I was short of options, but I'm able to shop about this year.

We used safeguard to import from Belgium on the VIN. They only insured us once we hit the UK. Dealer drove the van to the ferry port, so solved that problem. After the first year we went back to comfort insurance as they were cheaper.

Always been the case with Comfort, fewer insurers will insure on a vin nowadays. Safeguard, Scenic do, NFU only if you are an existing customer. I think ABI will but double the premium on personal imports.

Imported brand new Hymer from Belgium in September. Both Scenic and Safeguard were happy to quote on the VIN.

Use Safeguard, we had the same problem with comfort. Back with them now though.

So much for EU harmonisation. Pfffft. The UK insurance industry doesn't really care. Personal imports are as welcome as leprosy to them.

In 2007 I insured my import via Adrian Flux on the VIN number, but that cover only began when I drove off the ferry in Dover. Until then it was temporary 3rd party only, included in the fees I paid for the German export number plates. It made the drive from Bavaria to Calais somewhat unrelaxing to say the least. The time limit for getting it MOT'd and re-registered with DVLA was insufficient for me and the insurers cancelled my policy while I was still having conversion work done. I wouldn't know if the personal import insurance problems have changed much if at all in the past 10 years but it can be worrisome.

AIB wouldn't touch me when I got a quote last week, because we dont have another car!
Safeguard we're happy to quote on the VIN, and stated the vehicle would be covered from the moment I drove it from a dealer in Germany,( yes, in Germany, not just from a uk port) then to a uk MOT garage, and to home address. Nothing else until registered on uk plates.

Didn't take it up as not buying yet, just seeing what I could get.
Cover was for a year, 365 in eu, full breakdown and recovery, on a £75K van, price was £780. FYI.
