I know it this has been discussed on Fun quite often but it can't be stressed often enough!!
This is the result of having your Electric Hook Up tightly coiled whilst passing current through it. This guy had this reel next to a tyre!!!! on the site we are on at Peniscola . There was a 10amp breaker on the hookup point and a strong wind blowing at the time.
It doesn't need much imagination to guess what could have happened.
Please uncoil your hookup lead.
Sorry about the rant:eek:

Look at the inside of the reel.

Why would blue instead of orange make any difference ? I thought the only difference is blue is artic cable for cold weather and coils better .

Blue stays cooler longer because of the colour(y)

Orange gets hot like the sun.

Good picture, serious lesson. I see leads lying in tangled heaps all the time, often on hired vans.

Ignore them, they're just being silly, so long as the cables are the same capacity it doesn't make a difference for this sort of thing.

I use arctic cable for my hook up but not the reel. I have another 3 x 50 metre cable reels with the same arctic cable. They have labels on the reels saying they are rated at 1000 watts coiled and 3000watts unwound.
Nothing wrong with having a coiled cable if you use low wattage equipment but if you are running your heating, microwave and toaster off it, you may want to unwind it fully.

Lying in a tangled heap is fine :)

Only if tightly coiled on a former of some sort, over a considerable cable length and carrying a fair current such as fridge, electric heating or that sort of thing is there a danger!

I assumed that coiled cables could induce a current or maybe they create a magnetic field that could heat something and that's why you shouldn't use them coiled... Wrong.

It's just that the wire does generate a small amount of heat when it's carrying high currents, normally barely noticeable. If it's tightly coiled up on a reel, the heat has nowhere to go and it slowly toasts itself.

Just sling the spare cable in an untidy heap under the van and it'll be fine. Your Swimbo will thank you for it.
