First Hymer bought new in 2008, next one 2014, and latest van new this year. Intend to keep this one providing I pass my medical at 70 in 3 years time but I can always be tempted by a new one at any time.

8 years on my self build, she is starting to fall apart now as she was previously a badly abused scaffolders van.

Next self build will be on a much new much tidier van and that one I hope will see me out.

We've had ours 13 years and despite what some people may think; it ticks all the boxes and i'm more than happy to keep it longer and it just passed 70000 miles so plenty of life left in the old girl yet

I think if you brought new a motor of any description around 2000 or before with out all the electronic stuff there is good chance it will last longer than anything new today.

If they were so good then, they'd still make them.

They probably was good but the cost of electronic stuff seems to make repairs on new stuff unviable.
I've never had electronics go wrong on any of my bikes or cars.

This reminds me of old folk who say "back in my day cars were built to last."

So where are they all then?

Rusted away.....

At least with rust a lot more people could fix it at a reasonable price. The cheapest plug in diagnostic test is £85 plus vat. Fellow at work had an early 2000 ish Volvo repairs would be more then the value so scrapped it and leased a new one. Now saying all old motors were perfect but you had a bit more of a chance with them.
