fluorescent tubes (1 Viewer)

the 60cm long fluo tube in my hymer appears to be on the way out [ at least I presume it is the tube ]

so I whipped it out to have a look see and it is just marked ...15 watts

well that's just fine , but it made me realise I don't know what voltage these tubes work at !

perhaps domestic lights reduce the voltage to 12v or motorhome fitment transform up to 230 v

what am I looking to buy ? fitting looks identical to my domestic lighting ; do I go to the local electrical shop and just buy one of the correct length ?

Hi lebesset,check to see if it only works on hook-up ? = 240v or on l/batt = 12v ?
your local supplier should be able to get which ever one you need---- I would be very surprised if it went through a inverter up to 240 v

Hi fluorescent tubes are AC so there will be some circuitry in the fitting if its run from 12v DC to covert to AC, also I believe the voltage is dependant on length and diameter, so again the circuitry in the fitting will sort that. So I think any tube of the same size will be ok.

If it is flickering its highly likely to be the tube, is it a very slim tube?

I take the ones we stock home and use them in the under cabinet lights in the kitchen so they will be 240v AC

12v fluorecent lamp fittings usually have a small basic invertor built in to run @ 230v so the tubes will be 230v.

Just ordered up a pile of those cheap LED strips.. Replacing all my tubes with them. Tubes draw a lot of juice when they start and are not all that economic to run compaired to LED option..

As you have one on the way out might be worth swapping yours out

Got them from fleabay .. 2 x 48 cm strips £3.95 including postage.

There are several pairs still up for grabs.

In my Swift Bessacarr they are 12V I replaced the tube with a strip of LED's keeping the same fitting.:thumb:

Not sure what vintage your Hymer is - ours is 2003 and the manual specifies the following tube formats depending on location and model.

Living area long / Cooker (transistor tube) 12V 13W
Living area short (transistor tube) 12V 8W
Cooker lamp (transistor tube) 12V 18W
Reading over-bed lamp(s) (transistor tube) 12V 8W

well , quick update
popped into a ferreteria here in javea with the used tube , boss produced the same size from his stock for domestic use , popped it in and it worked perfectly
so I asked him what voltage they worked at and he said ...depends on the circuitry
also asked if the domestic ones he sold always worked in motorhomes and got a definitive answer ...not always

now you know ...maybe
