im looking to get a solar panel.
to help when we wild camp.
im looking at getting a 85 wat panel.
should get it fixed on the roof.
or have it free standing
all advise welcome

If secured on roof then you have limited security issues and you have limited position for the sun

If left on ground then you have big security issues but can point at sun

I have an 85 Watt on the roof with one Battery.

In October it kept us going for 3 days no issues in fact would have been longer but we hooked up.

Personally on the next MH i would do exactly the same, on the roof no hassle just keeps charging

Got my new 85 W panel sitting in the garage waiting to go on the roof if this weather ever gets a bit warmer .

We have an 85W on the roof with 2* 110AH batteries, in the summer this works fine for us, unless the kids have the TV's on for 10 hours a day.

You will need a fair bit of space to keep an 85w panel in your van without damaging it or the van. Also I would thing it would be easy damaged if it was beside the van.

i have a much simpler idea than having the panel free-standing outside the van.....just stuff £300 under a small stone outside the van.

this way you cut out the hassle of buying the panel in the first place when it gets nicked

Been thinking about this myself having just bought an 80W panel. On Friday at 3PM, a clear day but with low sun, I got 0.5A when the panel was flat. When I pointed it directly at the sun I got 2.5A.
I'm not going to fix the panel on the roof because:

No need to drill cabling and fixing holes in roof
At least twice the performance on average
I like to park under trees in hot weather
Keeps roof free for kayak and canoe (not a requirement for everyone, though:Cool

Security and convenience are compromised but if you leave the van you can always put the panel on the roof - a determined thief will get a fixed panel off the roof without too much trouble.

Bear in mind, a panel that is flat panel receives about 1/3 the total it could receive if it was always facing the sun.

A panel that is angled up to noon day sun receives about 2/3 of what it could receive if it was always facing the sun.

So... Flat = 1/3
Angled = 2/3
Aways facing = 3/3
