Altering the mileage on a electronic speedo (1 Viewer)

How easy is it for traders to fiddle the mileage on a modern electronic speedometer?

I have seen several supposed low mileage vans where there is little or no history, and wonder how genuine some of these are.

How easy is it for a buyer to judge the true mileage of a van by the condition of the cab/interior/exterior etc, say for one with 15k on the clock?

i would think these, along with just about everything else, is ECU linked making it nearly impossible without very expensive sortware to re-program the UCU.

could also be talking crap but it sounds logical to me.

Its a 20 minute job, but its not as simple a plugging in a lappy im afraid.

The speedo has to be removed from the vehicle and sometimes some pretty clever electronic jiggery pockery is required with some component changes needed.

It takes longer to remove and refit the clocks than to do the actual "clocking".

My advice is to look very carefully for any signs of finger prints INSIDE the glasses. Take a cloth or tissue and if you see any prints try and rub them off, if they wont rub off they are inside the glasses which means the clocks have been removed and walk away.

A friend of mine does it for his close friends and its very common so beware!!

Mileage correction is big business, especially with limited mileage lease agreements that most companies have these days. I know of a guy that does it and has just put 8 Vivaro vans to 18-20k all just finished a 2 year year lease, when they go to auction they will easily fetch £1000 more than the true mileage, the guy will be 8k better off and someone will think they have a nice low mile van:Sad: The dodgy dealers investment 8 x £50 = £400, 8k return, you can see why people do it, dodgy or not

you need the reg number, current MOT test number or the V5 document number

this gives every recorded mileage at mot, providing its had one of course, and has been MOT'd since computerization started.

plus....have you ever checked the mileage with the MOT info register when buying ?
i havent !!!!

SO...... how can you tell from the general condition of the van if it really has say 15k on the clock ?

Drivers seat, wear on the bolster closest the door, condition of steering wheel, should be like new, pedal rubbers should also look like new, if it doesn't feel right when you view, walk away.

Rubber on clutch/brake.
Carpets.
Dirt in engine bay.
General wear and tare.
Tyres.
Ignition key - look how worn it is.
Just about anything that shows mileage.
Gut feeling.

look at both ignition keys.
at £90 a piece dont think get rich quicks will bother renewing them my van came with 3

i do muti stops (gas man)

the steering wheel has a lovley shine at the top
and the bottom feels more like new and rough

drivers door and sld locks the key is now a poor fit
key has worn the bottom of the lock so you have to lift it to operate the lock
strange thing is the key fits the ignition and dosnt move

i have now swopped the keys over( so i dont get locked out)
worn in the wallet
un worn on the key ring

the brake rubber is also worn as is the clutch pedal
and throttle

the floor rubber is worn but not to excese just noticable

the drivers seat cover is still in good shape without wear
its 27 07 06 registered
and done 36,000m

i think alarms would ring if you were presented with it to purchase
and told its only done 36.000

i do journeys from 100 yds shortest to 40 miles longest
unless sent on a cousre in the midlands

still a nice drive but for a low miler its worked hard
