As the time is getting nearer to collecting our new motorhome, I thought I would ring around for some insurance quotes. Bearing in mind we will have a Vanbitz Growler and Vanbitz tracker, will be keeping it in storage at a CaSSOA Gold storage site and have dual camera. Also, unfortunately, I had a 50/50 fault accident in August 2014, only VERY minor damage to the other car and mine was fixed by a friend for free.

First of all I phoned Comfort as many people seem to recommend them. I went through all the details and after about 20 minutes got a quote of £640.98 without breakdown cover.

Secondly I rang Caravan Guard. After being on the phone to them for OVER an hour, and having to change phones 3 times because the batteries went flat (cordless landlines - useless), including breakdown the quote was £1,791.00!!!!! After I'd picked myself up off the floor, I politely declined their cover.

I was thinking more along the lines of £350. Is that being really naive?

Caravan Guard quote sounds ridiculous. We are insured with AIB, they were quite reasonable, perhaps you could try them.

I have just renewed mine, highest quote £820, lowest £350 with Camptons, C&CC the same (member 5% discount) and they have an online quotation that saves the long phonecall.

When I first got my Motorhome it was in addition to the two cars we already have so I had no no claims discount to deduct apart from the introductory 25% that is allowed. That doesn't help for a start! Next make sure you give a realistically low annual mileage if its only used for UK holidays for example or more if you are going to tour Europe.

If the van is brand new then expect a higher premium somewhat dependent on how much you are paying. I am paying what you expect to pay for a 6 year old van worth about £40k with a declared mileage of 8k per annum fully comp with breakdown cover, legal expenses, modest excess and overseas recovery, single driver but with no accident or claims to report with Comfort. I was with Caravan Guard but they tried pushing the price up so I changed. I am a 64 year old retired chartered accountant.

£640 doesn't sound too bad all things considered from my perspective depending on the value of your van, mileage, claims history etc.

Others may be able to encourage you more than this!

BING..

I suspect that's your problem..
Just ring them all and see what the best price is.

A lot will depend on your post code, if it is in an area which is regarded as 'high risk' that will be reflected in the premium. The premium is based on where the vehicle is kept so if the storage site is in such an area you will be paying extra. Might be an idea to ask Comfort if that is the reason why the premium is relatively high (I pay them circa £289 including breakdown but live out in the country) and if so see if you can find another storage site in a lower rated area.

Another problem is that we have no NCB to carry over as it is on the car. I still think that second quote was ridiculous, I wouldn't mind if I was only 18 :D2. I tried the online comparison sites but as we don't know the registration number yet and they won't quote for over 30 days ahead anyway, it's no good.

We have been looking for a secure storage site for months, so when this one came up we jumped at it. We are already paying the storage fee even though we haven't got the van yet. It is a Gold CaSSOA site, so we should get a reduction in price for that. We do live on the outskirts of east Manchester though

Just pretend you're picking it up next month ;) You don't need the reg for a quote (usually) :)

Direct line approx £300. No tracker and no growler. Parked at home or anywhere within the AB10 postcode. No way you should be paying £1800 or even £640. Your £350 is closer IMHO. Good luck (y)

@Neckender, will give them a try. That's the other bugbear, we will not be leaving the UK, but try to get insurance without European cover. Seems we will have to pay for something we won't use.

It surprised us that a virtually identical Motorhome but of different make can be hugely different to insure.
We had our Bessacarr E450 insured with Comfort and fancied a Rapido 9048df. Comfort said that will be another £250, doubling what we were paying. We decided in the end on a Hymer B544 expecting a similar hike in premium.
On changing over to the Hymer they said "no change in premium" and no admin charge because we had informed them recently that we would be changing.
Both models are virtually the same and the Hymer was a higher price.

Have you tried camping and caravan club? Mine's a different ball park entirely (self conversion of a 9 year old van) but they could cope with none of us having van experience, one driver under 30, no other vehicle, me (main driver) having no recent no claims history (contract hire car for 15 years) and actually having a write off claim last year (not my fault but 3rd party didn't stop so classed as fault), oh and the other driver having only 2 years of UK license.

We've specified no European cover, don't know how much that afected the premium though. Just over £200 - Adrian flux was nearer £2000 and couldn't handle me being deaf.

Moved to secure site not CaSSOA and gave me £100 back :) Hoping with Growler fitted this year to be the same if not slightly cheaper, Caravan Guard and Safeguard were £450-£500 last year. I am a member of C&CC now so will try them but not due till June.

It's not until you insure vehicles abroad that you realise how cheap Uk motor insurance is. Then again we can drive as far as we like each year.(y) oh & it's the vehicle that is insured so no need to add drivers.Long as they are over 25 usually.Odd occasion 30.

Before we took delivery of our new Carthago (2 years ago) I had a bonkers quote from Caravan Guard too. The price was well over £1k and their security requirements almost meant storing the van in Fort Knox.
Went to Safeguard who gave me excellent cover at a fair price.

When we moved ours from a CASSOA Silver site to a non-CASSOA site the difference in premium was only about £30, albeit a few years ago. We saved that in diesel, given that the first site was a 50 mile round trip and the second was 15 miles.

It'll be interesting to see what quotes we're offered in February when we exchange old MH for new.
