For those in peril on the sea.

Many of us cross the English Channel, as it’s still just about called, before Brussels enforces a different name. Before booking on a French ferry, you might remember the rallying cry of the French Navy.

In times of peril, the French Naval command is “A l’eau.” (To the water). “C’est l’heure!” (It’s time).

In other words, “’Allo Sailor”.

30 years.
The sea is calm to-night.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand;
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.

Dover beach by Matthew Arnold.

Actually its the motto over the gates to the French Naval Academy in Paris....not!

First quoted by the late, lamented Willy Rushden on radio 4's Give Us a Clue.

I think the academy is on the left bank...:winky:
