hi rob, you can make them yourself if you have letter number punches, they can be on aluminium or tin. or something similar. its another one of the joke rules. firms like sv tec or wheel base may let you have one or charge the world . cheers alan.

Hi
Just use your printer and laminate it, use double sided film( the 3m stuff) to stick it on so it takes some getting off, and bobs you mothers brother. VOSA was happy with mine. Looked at my Chrysler Voyager last week and the data plate looks exactly the same.

As long as there is some legitamacy ( put the VIN on it ) and no smileys it should be OK

I must be missing the point here, I thought we had to have our vehicles inspected by VOSA or DVLA if there was to be an upgrade in weights on the VIN plate.
We have a Navara which has air suspension to assist weight of our Kountrylite, does that mean I can upgrade my MTW by making a plate myself or do we have to contact DVLA for an inspection.
Cheers

Original post did state via DVLA, once the paperwork is done anyone can make a plate. Some vehicles need inspecting, for others that had originally been downrated it is just a paper exercise but still needs DVLA approval.

I admit I am confused here too. Are these 'plates' relating to trailors, or is this to do with the weight of our Motorhomes? And also is this something we only have to deal with if the weight of the actual MH is changed?

The original post was concerning a motorhome that had been uprated. The same plates are available for trailers (as mentioned by pappajohn)

Hi Rob,

Could you please explain to me the procedure I need to take re DVLA to upgrade my train weight.
We have a Kountrylite high profile and use a Navara to haul it.
The Navara has upgraded air bag assisted suspension.
We currently have a MTW of 5810Kg and when we took it to the public weighbridge it came in with a train weight 6020Kg about 3% over.
I am confused as to how DVLA would authorise an upgrade without having examined the Navara firt.
Hope you can help

Hi Rex

I understand your confusion, it is a minefield when dealing with weights on vehicles.
The first thing to consider is that for some peculiar reason the undertaking of an "up plate" is a voluntary exercise.

My understanding is that a vehicle can only be up plated providing that its original design maximum is not exceeded. Most of the re-plating work takes place on vehicles that were designed and used somewhere other than the UK. The one exception being mini artics...................the best person to speak to on that one would be VW Alan. :thumb::thumb:

In essence, most of the bigger US pick ups, 250 series and above all have a DVWR (Design Vehicle weight rating) that exceeds the various Tax classifications applicable in the UK. So, most of these are down plated to 3500 Kgs GVWR (with a train weight usually not exceeding 8250 Kgs). This allows a trailer maximum of 4750 kgs (8250 - 3500)

In my example the importer plated mine at 3500 Kgs GVWR with a train of 7000 Kgs (dont ask me why, I have no idea I purchased it 2nd hand). What I wanted to do is to increase my train weight, this is now done.

Looking at your Navarra, I assume that the MTW of 5810 Kgs is also the design maximum as stated by the manufacturer (Nissan)
In this instance I believe that the only thing you can do is shed weight as up plate would not be permitted.

I am as ever prepared to stand corrected, maybe a VOSA specialist (such as VW Alan) will come along and shed further light on this murky area.

Hope that helps

Not strictly true (thankfully:Cool:)

The MTW of 5810 quoted by Nissan is a figure based on towing via a 50mm ball.
When towing via a 5th wheel coupling, it is accepted that this figure may be exceeded as it is a MUCH stronger coupling.
In the case of Fifth wheel co, they have designed and fiited (I believe with full Nissan approval) a method of fitting the coupling to the Nav which has been tested and approved by VOSA up to 6.5 ton train weight.

in the case of "other" 5ver dealers in the UK, the system of fitting used is the same as that fitted in the U.S to thier version of the Navara which is called the Frontier.
This is an accepted procedure in the U.S but unfortunately has not been given "official" approval for upgrading (yet) in the UK.
I know of at least one UK based fiver dealer who is working on this at the moment and I for one am desperately looking forward to hearing from him!

hi ,its a very mixed up legislation cocerning driving licences and weight allowances . in the states its all different to here. there are body chassis mods to up rate weight of load and train it all comes down to your vehicle. i have looked at this for quite awhile . the advantage of being under 3.5 ton is you can drive on a b+e that allows any weight trailer so long as you dont exceed the train wt. with it comes width limits. also is your vehicle an artic in the eyes of construction and use.an artic must impose at least twenty per cent of the loaded trailer on to the towing vehicle. there is confusion with goose neck or pins n plate hitches. (cant go there ,i gave in.)
if we take an iveco mini artic made for iveco. 4.5 ton down rated to 3.5 .can now be driven on b+epre 97 car lic. it as atrain of 8.7 . it keeps the train of the higher original wt.
yes 5th wheel company do apear to have their answer .cant speak about it dont know what they do.
the problem is with yanks they drop the wts to allow easier entry and registration. i,m surewith the right paper work it can be raised.then we are onto a different ball game. width etc.
i think there is a problem in uk with dealers selling the wrong size and weight trailers .they may be under to start with but i doesnt takelong to over load.
if i was to build another outfit i would probavly start with a down plated mitsubishi or isuzu truck double cab. they have 4ltr +engines. but keep the train mine could be 9.8 ton ,because its based on the 6.3 ton truck i voluntary drop the train to 825 to allow c1+e drivers to drive it. to go bak to the question can i upgrade ,speak to sv tec i find them very helpfull. also depends on if you want to use thepickup for anything else work wise.
ask as many questions as you want i will try to help. it is always treated as individual needs and aplications. whatyou need to know is unladen wts, gross vehicle wts ,train wts .cheers alan.

I am not particularly into American trucks but a few weeks ago I was having a discussion on a similar vein with The Sundowners and Nigel was saying that this year the rules on weights altered - I think it was more a change to the down rating of the load capacity and it may be worth a PM to them if they are not on line on this one
