The bus just had an mot today, passed, no problem, but the tester asked did I want a class 4 or a class 7, I presumed class 7 as its plated for 4 ton, but he said he could class 4 it so didn't make any difference to him.
I went with class 7 for the reason its over 3.5tonne and didn`t want to have any problem if stopped.
Heard a story about if I`m carrying a motorcycle on the rear rack it would need a class 7, true or not? I don't know.

However, would class 4 (same as a car) be ok? does it matter? will it rain or go dark by morning? will anyone care?

just interested as to what you good people do.

7 years followed by a break of 11 years and then 4+ years but given up now
If your "bus" is a motorhome, my understanding is that it should be a Class 4 MOT, regardless of weight.

Yes Dave, its a motorhome. (Burstner)

Was just curious as to why the different classes available for it to be tested.

it really comes down to a m,bike on a rack is class 4 if you have a inside load area then it could be classed as a class 7 . but its really very rare any do get classed 7.
it comes down to a load area used for carrying items not immediately involved in living in the vehicle makes the vehicle a living van. it changes all sorts.
you could have a chat with what was vosa and let them explain all the rules .
i know its a hard one to come to a real definite result.
its common knowledge that thousands of m,homes have wrong mots etc and arent m,homes so could be registered wrong and insured wrong .
but usually bikes inside change the vehicle . bikes outside thats ok.
some vehicles are mot exempt.
google v112g and have a read.

Good info, thanks.

I do use the motorhome for business use occasionally , it is correctly insured for both business and SDP, and yes I have carried a scooter on the rack and sometimes in the garage which is when there could be a grey area of law? insurance law, we all know that if something should happen then some insurance companies may try to wriggle out of making a payment.

you just need to know where to go :)

to be honest, I paid that last year and thought it was cheap, I asked 3 times was the price correct, they said yes, this year I didn`t question it.

I would estimate 99.9% of all motorhomes are in class IV....even the American 11 tonners.

Its not commercial vehicle for reward
Its not a minibus for hire
Its not a bus/coach for hire
Therefore, its a heavy passenger car....as far as MOT is concerned.

I'm by no means an expert but I did read a substantial thread discussing DVLA (or whatever their name is today) and their approach to taxing and MOT'ing Motorhomes. The crux of that thread seemed to be if you MH was full of only things you would have in your home then it's a MH. However if it contained a vehicle (or other goods items) then it was not a MH it was a Goods vehicle that you lived in.

All motorhomes are Class4 regardless of weight as stated before, the only way Class 7 gets involved is if a Class 4 ramp will not accommodate the test vehicle.
