We have just bought a new Burstner Nexxo Soveriegn t740 that has the 130 multijet, which we find very under powered and seems to run out of gears. Our previous motorhome a 2013 Bessacarr E584 had the 150 multijet and although quite a bit heavier than the new van it was far superior in both pulling power and fuel consumption.

Several people have suggested we have it chipped, so I thought that I would ask you all your opinion on the matter.

I would, but just make sure it cant be seen and effect your warrentee(y) or maybe ask Fiat if they will do it(y) it does beg the question though, why didn't you buy the 150??

If your van is factory new it may take quite a few thousand miles to run the engine in and loosen things up a little. I reckon a diesel takes 12k-15k miles to run in. We have the 130 on a 3.5 tonne low profile and there is plenty power and we average 30mpg. When new the first few tankfuls only delivered 25/26mpg.

My son bought a 2012 Dethleffs last year with 12,000 miles on the clock. He tows a trailer with grandson's Autograss micro on it and can't believe how quick it is. This is from a chap who runs a remapped 335d BMW and doesn't hang around at times. He was going to have it remapped but decided that it didn't need it.

I think the comment about mileage is spot on. I know that my 3.0 litre Fiat was a lot quicker, and more economical from around 15,000 miles on.

A lot of people are against remapping but I had mine done by Wow Power a few years ago and it certainly improved the performance, although I am careful not to let it labour in the higher gears when faced with long hill climbs.

If it were me, I would train myself to get used to going slower.

This way I get to see more.

Just saying

With all the shite that is happening in the world and all you have to worry about is to chip or not to chip then life must be pretty good. ;)

Good Grief!
Can I make a difference to this "shite" - no - so there's no point "worrying" about it.
Can I do things that make me, and those around me happier - yes - so those are the things I will concern myself about.

Back OT - I'm also interested to know the cost/performance balance.

What do you mean running out of gears? You need to rev it a bit more in the lower gears in that case. ;)

I'm confused. Running out of gears is normally taken to mean it needs another, higher, gear because it is revving too high in top?

I keep debating whether to chip ours, its only a 125 2.3 renault, but was thinking to wait until a few more miles are on the clock, you can get the plug n play ones for the renault and apparently untraceable if ever it needs to go in for warranty work

The whole idea is that you share your knowledge /experience for the benifit of the collective
If everybody PM'd where would the forum be?
By all means keep something private , private
But avoiding 'getting involved with the opinions of others ........'
Did I miss a step here ?

Mine ( previous van ) was done by WOW tuning
They ended up doing it over as I was not really happy with the results.
It was almost a year on when it was re done and still no extra charge.
Ended up as pleased as punch !

On this van I have a Torquing Diesel box and that too has delivered very worth while results.

just purchased a 2010 Burstner Ixeo 2,300 cc, plated 3700kg , looked under the bonnet and found it has been chipped, goes very well , showing average 28.5 mpg on dash computer. hasn't got the get up and go of the 3 litre that I drive for work.

Do you mean "chipped" or a black box, I wouldn't think you would see a chip opening the bonnet.

We seem to be on about two different things here with some talking chipped.. by which I take to mean an external plug in device of some sort...
I know it used to refer to opening the ecu and adding/changing a chip... but don't think that's relevant now..
The other option is a remap of the ecu... effectively flashing it with new parameters. ..

Had our 2.3 130bhp Bolero remapped a couple of years ago, cost £295, and well happy with the results, wanted more torque, which we got, around 20% I reckon, an extra 2-3 mpg overall was an unexpected bonus, and a far quieter and smoother engine which was an unexpected surprise, very happy with our remap.

Sorry if this is a Noob question Andy but do they both end up doing the same thing in the end ?
I only ask as i might get my 2007 2.3ltr 130 multijet chipped for more performance
