After putting off the job for years, I finally arrange for the van to have a lung transplant (new vacuum pump).

Monday 10.45.

Parked in waiting room for the surgeon (Dr Micha) to finish with his current patient.

The replacement lung is ready...

Being a village garage, not only is it a repair shop, but also a bit of a community centre. People drop in from time to time to pass the time of day and indulge in witty banter. (There used to be a similar one in Sennybridge. They had biscuits though.)

I am hoping the driving cam for the pump isn't too worn. Had I known about it, I would have bought one just in case. Won't know until the patient is on the operating table and opened up.

Taking this opportunity, whilst waiting, of doing a bit of cleaning and tidying inside...

11.30...

Dr Micha makes a start.

First job... bonnet off, radiator out.

Other patients have arrived... no doubt the surgeon's time will be split between different operations.

You do realise this is not covered by your E111, don't you.

It could be quite painful.

1.30... back from lunch.

1.45... pump off.

Problem...

As suspected, not only is the vacuum pump cam a tad worn but the disc that drives it is completely worn out.

20161003_143144.jpg

Why they don't sell a new driving cam disc thingy with the new pump I don't know!

Anyhow, one of the gang has gone off to try to find/get a replacement (hence no photo of it...)

Fingers crossed.

If we have to order one I am told it will take five days!

So I might have to live here for a while!

And there is a possibility of a VIP Funster visiting QMJ on Wednesday.

The really pleasing thing is that the range of faults that I have been experiencing over the months, and which have slowly got worse and worse, are down to this wear.

Being a super Mercedes, the vacuum generated by the pump is used for several, different things.

It assists the automatic gear changes and kick down pedal.

It works the brake servo AND it operates the diesel cut off valve to stop the engine when the ignition key is turned off.

It will like driving a new motorhome if/when I get all these items working properly again.

That means that you will be able to go on proper campsites without fearing embarrassment as it bangs and farts and generally frightens people.

No more parking behind the brickworks hoping the machinery will mask the noise.

Pleased to see you are back on the road so soon. I wonder if it was this that caused your brake issues in France?

5.00(ish)

Job finished.

The Mega Boss even helped putting the 'bonnet' back on...

20161003_164011.jpg

Test drive to the Supermarket... nearly lost everything off my table and all the washing up water when I first just touched the brake pedal... YIPPPPPPEEEEE.

The brakes are superb... the kickdown works better... gear changes are smooth but maybe need a slight adjustment now (see Mr Glastry's post above) and, joy of joy, the engine actually stops immediately I turn the key off.

Price for supplying second hand cam thingy, new radiator water (green) and fitting it was all...

€80.

I remember those wipers well... my first car was a 100E Ford Escort...

The Hymer has electric wipers... not that I need them very often these days.
