You could actually go onto their site and attempt to book it Roy, without actually doing so of course. I'd be interested too.

I crossed over last March on this route with 7m hymer and I paid about £160. Nice crossing, got a cabin, and as I live near Plymouth more than paid for itself Vs Dover in saved fuel costs

Have done the return crossing twice this year June and September. Amazing the difference an extra 1.5m (8m) makes and over 3m high. We are associate voyager club members and get 30% discount but paid £475 in June and £505 this September night crossing both ways including cabin for 2 with bunks and breakfast.

Used to use this route when travelling by car, but overnight crossings can work out expensive (particularly as we preferred a cabin to the reclining seats, in which we found it difficult to sleep). With the motorhome, we tend to go Poole-Cherbourg, which is a morning crossing, overnighting at Poole in the vehicle check-in lanes. Do tend to return Saint-Malo to Portsmouth though - daytime crossing and location/timings suit us better than other routes.

The reason I want to use this particular route is because Portsmouth is only a few miles down the road for me and the fuel and time saving would be worth having..Roy

Just looked for August and it's 640 round trip (day crossing 6.5m x 3m), will stick with the tunnel and the longer drive but for 550 I can get five return trips to France.

But you do live that much closer to Folkestone than me .its only about 130 miles from Newbury to Folkestone but it takes near four hours everytime due to roadwork or accident/incident ..and as I want to be further south when I start my holidays it makes more sense than driving all to way to dover then all the way south again from Calais .so fuel and time come in play here for me. ..Roy

Totally understand, we're heading for south west France but was a bit surprised how expensive the ferries were even on the shorter French crossings.
Le Havre is a lot cheaper.got ferry back from there last a week yesterday for £111.00 one way plus a chair ..Roy

Wonder why the huge differences are being quoted . Does it depend on who you talk to at Brittany ferries or the system that takes the booking on line . ..strange ...

It depends on the length/height of your vehicle, time of day and probably most on whether you're travelling in the school holidays or not. September is outside the holidays and when the prices start to drop.
