We have just been in the Mosel. Yesterday we did a walk from the village of Veldenz. It circumnavigated the Schloss Veldenz. Along the route we came to one of the marked points.

This board gave the explanation of the ruined area we see today. Anyone tell us what it was?

It looks very much like that but not so big. But the wooden elements were there originally according to the picture on the board.

Thanks for your responses.

I just ran it through a translate programme and it came up with this (a bit of imagination required in places!) - maybe somebody will come along with a more accurate & colloquial translation, but meanwhile it'll have to do:

The Heidenmauer
A Celtic tribe , the Treveri , moved in the centuries before Christ was born in the fertile soil of the Moselle region . For protection against enemies they lay on the defend and favorable High jerking of Veldenz to a flight or Fliehburg . For this purpose, a portion Wall was built , the shielded this mountain jerking of the only open side . In this line of defense ( the so-called " pagan wall " ) integrated to the natural rocky ridges of the High train . This Walle ( Casar called murus gallicus = the Gallic walls ) are typical of the Celts . A dense framework made of logs ( up to 5 meters high and 3.5 meters thick) was ausgefullt with stones and rock bricken .
The walls were built without any mortar , covered on the outside walls by stones so that the ends of the transverse tribe remained visible . Inside the timber was connected by long bar and could not therefore warden torn apart. Within these walls were residential houses , created a Reprasentationsbau for the respective Keltenfursten , storerooms , garden and paths .

" Pagan wall "
The settlement area of the Treveri stretched between the Rhine and Maas . They usually lived in Einzelgehoften and small settlements , Hofgemeinschaften the upper classes were in Hohen settlements .
Even more impressive than the pagan wall is the Celtic ring wall in Otzenhausen on the border with Saarland . There probably existed a Celtic city .

Thanks @CWH. Didn't think to use a translator. Surprised it turned out so well. Would like to see the Celtic ring wall sometime.
