After reading Mr Carhil interesting post on his first weekend away in his motorhome I got to wonder...

How many of you Funsters drive your motorhomes at 80 mph on the motorways?

No as chief sat nag I won't let him drive more than 60+ but when he thinks I'm asleep he does do up to 65! He found we had cruise control after owning the van 2 years so plays with that!!
Never 80 even in a car! That's just madness!!:(

Why the hurry the minute the van leaves the drive, we are on holiday, we want to enjoy the scenery the different villages towns and countryside, not see a blur as we travel through, a steady 60 suit us.

Hardly ever. 55 - 60.

In the Autotrail I never went above 65 all the time I owned it

The new pvc IH cruises nicely at around 60 and I suspect I will never go above 65 in that either

I wouldn't go at that speed it would not be safe or comfortable and would use juice like a hole in the tank whats the rush, for me 60 is just the right speed on the motorway and I get there just as quick as racers and a lot more relaxed (y) if Iam in the van I'm on holiday and the driving is part of it.

I'm not entirely convinced that the laws of physics would allow me to go 80 in the van!

I guess that speed would return about 24 mpg in my van.
50 - 55 mph gets me 34 mpg
But then I'm a Scottish/Yorkshire man ---- and retired.

(Although 127 + mph on my Yamaha bike between M1 - J23-24 cost me £230 + a four month ban once. Horses for courses I guess)

When we first got the van tried 80mph on a beautiful stretch of autoroute in France. Lets just say the handling became interesting, now I know I'll never need to try it again.

Funny I have just sat on the tail of a 54 reg Lakia or something like that on the M25 between St Albans and Ruislip. I phoned my sister said we were popping in. She said give me half hour to get dressed....this van passed me as I go in ed the M25. Umm I thought. Stick with this and it will slow me down. Not so he didn't drop below 70 all the way so got here in just 15 mins.....:) We're you a member...

Regularly drive around 80mph/125kmh in Europe, rarely touch 80mph in the UK.
I'm often overtaken by other motorhomers, so certainly not the fastest...

Sounds about right.
Driving at 80mph will use around 30% more fuel than 60mph.

In the RV 50 to 55mph was fast enough and returned around 10mpg.
Never went over 65mph and would expect no more than 7mph.

Real speed or indicated speedo speed  ?

Don't think my poor old girl would do 80mph, even downhill with a following wind :(.

Since having cruise fitted, more than comfortable to poodle along at an indicated 60mph, real speed 54.

In France on an autoroute cruising just under 60mph, I got 35mpg out of our camper. At 80mph we got 19mpg :(

Our MH sounds happiest just above 60 and rarely goes above 70 unless it is down hill on 130kph roads when it briefly gets to 80mph. I ease up as soon as the road flattens out.

I think you should be allowed to drive your MH at whatever speed you like. It is entirely your decision. Slowly for better mpg/relaxation or illegally fast if you want and are happy to accept the risks. Choose your own lifestyle and let others choose their's without being judged by others. :):):)

I don't even when it is permitted. By trial and error have found that 62.5mph is a "comfortable" speed for the poor old MH.

And if they did Mr @JJ if would involve putting things away ;) and not driving off with everything on the table.
The only time I go for it is  if I have a swaying caravan in front or a trucker pushing me  but if he can keep the speed up I let him go. :D Bob

Na, always around 55/60 optimum speed for fuel saving, that's what we say anyway
