Is anyone able to help... im not great on computers and my search skills are lacking..
The drive shafts from motor to step has snapped..
I've searched but unable to identify the part
It's a thule 550mm single leaf step and
The splined part sits in the motor gearing and the squared end drives the step linkage..
The step..

Hi, Not sure if this is the part you are looking for. Item 10 maybe:
http://www.theomnistorcentre.co.uk/1500602377-repair-kit-pinion-slide-out.html
Thanks that was quick but my step is a single leaf step not a slide out.. not clear from my photo I'm afraid..
I've seen diagrams similar to the one you linked to that may have the part in them but no list of the various components in the diagram so unable to identify the part name..
Phone call to suppliers have met with we need a serial number and step dimension.. I can't find a serial number:)
Thanks
Andy

Seen some rubbish parts diagrams in my time!
Looks like you need a pinion kit but which one who knows! found this previous thread.

http://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/thule-step-v10-spares.108461/

a pinion kit,but not for yours unfortunately!

Cheers Richard. . Dealer said they would just order a new step... cant believe that... said it would be just as quick to replace step as replace broken part.. :Eeek:.. it took 5 min to get it out...but he insisted they would just replace the complete unit... what's the world coming to..... and more importantly how long will it take to get it?? Its a long way up for me little legs lol..

I was just about to say to let the dealer sort it. Your van is less than 3 months old. How long would your list of repairs be if you didn't keep fixing them yourself.

They probably wouldn't know how to take it apart!

We used to sell Vapormatic workshop equipment,if it went wrong and was in warranty they just replaced the item and never wanted the old one back so the we used to take them apart to see what was wrong, sometimes just a loose wire!

Lol.. perhaps I should make a list of the defects and post them..
If it had had to be returned to dealer for every fault I'd never have had van... but thestep part isn't as easy to get round...
I'm still thinking of trying to make one...:)
For time being it's a manual step.. secured closed with a pin through the linkage and side plate.. so I've got rid of the string at least

How much is it?
Whats it made of?
Will it weld?
Drill down the centre and screw it back together with some kind of key?
Sent it me and I'll have a look?

Did you have a look? They take me straight to parts breakdown of the Thule steps?
I found them on Google Chrome - Thule Steps - Images.

It's a steel casting with some machined surfaces..
Don't think welding or trying to re join is an option..
Would be easier just to machine a new part out mild steel..
The pain would be doing the splined piece..
I only have a hand operated slotting tool which would do the job after grinding up the right tool bit..
I might give it a go... and thanks for your offer...

I would consider a stainless steel, its a bit tougher for the drive splines but good luck. It shouldn't be too difficult if you have access to a lathe.

Unfortunately the stainless I have is difficult to machine.. it work hardens so you cant afford to take too many cuts or the tool will end up not cutting..
Anyhow I've done one out mild steel..hopefully get me by until the dealer replaces the step.. :Eeek:..all for just a broken shaft!

Some photos of work and finished item..
The slotting attachment was an unfinished project from years ago so had to sort that before completing the part... just hope it fits and works but can't see why not..

The blank after initial machining.

So why replace the step? Your rather excellent replacement shaft is likely to be at least as strong as the original. While you have it in your hand check if it matches a standard spline or star drive socket - if so it would be another source of tough splines.

The van is only months old..and they have said they will order anothe step.. so I'll let them do that..but that could take weeks or months.. hence the reason for sorting something to get by..
The original is a machined casting..so wasn't sure whether mild steel would last..it only has to withstand the initial inertia (if thats the right word )to get the step moving..
I did have a quick look at the splined drive bits in the tool box.. torx I think .. they are all 6 splines and the shaft was 8..so again just thought I'd try and make it..

Do you know why it sheared off in the first place? It would be unfortunate to say the least if it did the same again after all your hard work! (y)

Not really Richard. . The step wasn't jammed when it happened..
The break isn't clean and the casting may have been suspect..
The area around the fracture is dark with small cracks across the casting.. only about half the shafts metal is shiny at the break area ..so whether that was casting weakness or previous damage I'm not sure..

Nice to know you had similar thoughts about the spline drive bits (y).

Spot on job probably better than new - you certainly didn't need my help.
Appreciate anyone taking the time to reply and try and help..
I was tempted with the stainless suggestion but had a vague recollection of having a nightmare with it some time ago..

There are so many types of stainless - ( I come from Sheffield!) You probably picked up a hard one.
I once started machining a piece of what I thought was stainless and it set the lathe on fire! ---- It was Titanium!
