Am thinking of taking the 3 hour drive down to Istanbul for a few days. Its over 20 years since I was down there, so am a bit out of touch with the place. Has anyone been recently that can recommend a nice hotel for a weekend break.

Love the look of Raffles, just wondering how much I will get for a kidney though.

I think it should be fairly deserted, most of the residence of Turkey were arriving at Gatwick when I came through there on Wednesday.

We've stayed a few times in Istanbul. The Pierre Lotti, is/was a reasonable hotel in Sultanahmet and we've also stayed in a knocking shop just off Taksim Square. The roof terrace at the knocking shop had views to die for, overlooking the Bosphorous looking towards Üsküdar (Asia) when eating breakfast.

Sultanahmet is handy for the all the famous Cami's (mosques), the Grand Bazar, the trams, and the fish restaurants of Kumkapı.

Taksim is handier for Istilklal Cadezi (famous shopping street), the Galata Tower and the Golden Horn.

If you have time take the public boat bus up the Bosphorous and sample the yoghurt at Kanlıca and the skewered mussels in batter at Beykoz.

Istanbul, a truly remarkable city.

We have been tempted many times to try Kokoreç (pronounced korcorech). Often seen being grilled over charcoal it resembles a leg of pork joint. In fact it is lamb intestines cooked on a horizontal skewer similar to the vertical grilled Döner Kebap
- never plucked up the courage to try.
This and many other items of offal are considered delicacies by many Turks.

I can just see the headlines now.
Turkey's tourist industry rockets upwards overnight.

Turkish traffic does not faze me. Have had many tussles with Turkish Tonka truck drivers and Kamikaze bus drivers in the past.

Last visit had the full Turkish paid to get soaped and beaten up by a big fat Turkish bloke.:);)
Driving in Istanbul isn't a problem there are far worse places.

One of the memories that I will cherish until my end was the morning I woke up early on a camp bed, on a pavement beside my 100E Ford Van, in Istanbul.

I wouldn't normally have stirred that early in the morning, but a local dog had been "marking his territory" and I was in it...

Those were the days, hey!
