We're heading to the Netherlands today and stopping at Gravelines overnight for the first time.

Any recommendations for somewhere to eat this evening? Nothing fancy.

You'll get most choice by going alongside the canal up to the seafront area, but there are also one or two eateries in the old walled town.

There was a thread on here about this just the other day that suggested some places, but just to reiterate my point, avoid the Hotel Alexandria by the seafront. Food poisoning is no fun when you're in the van

There is a take away on the right of the square opposite the post office offering a good choice or if you are not concerned about the price the Best Western hotel by the bell tower also a good little pub at the side of it.

Didn't see that thread @jockaneezer sorry I know it can be irritating when people duplicate questions/threads but the forums are so busy these days its impossible to keep up!

If you are facing the boats, go left, past the bus stop, should be a chip van a bit further on but Jim says it's closed, anyway past that, over the bridge, up the other side of the boats towards lidl , au cap compass , excellent.

If you're in the Gravelines Aire you can actually see Au Cap Compass on the other side of the water but you have to walk round to it.

Not in our van, that's for sure. We had paella. It was horrible. It wouldn't have been far to walk though & there was plenty to go round.

It was one of those tins that you buy & keep at the back of the cupboard in case you find yourself miles from a shop & no fresh food. We bought it in France about 15 months ago & have never opened it, so we thought we would have it tonight to see if was any good - with a view to replacing it while still in France if it was.

We won't be replacing it! :(

If you are still about after 10am in the morning, call & say 'hello' before you go. We are the dark red Globecar with UK numberplates - not the almost identical one with German plates two up from us.

As a PS to this thread we had an excellent meal at Chez Delphine up by the seafront at Gravelines last night. We both agreed it was one of the best meals we'd had anywhere in France, let alone in Gravelines. The restaurant is retro-styled like a diner - loved it.

Only drawback - no vegetarian options that we could see, but we're both omnivores anyway. Website here, and it's open year round.

We've just walked upto Petit Philip, hoping to get our last Moules &Frites before returning to UK. Well it was a nice walk anyway, the only place that seemed open doing Moules & frite, so we sit down, waitress brings menu and says sorry no Moules:cry:
So walk back to Motorhome for baguette and pate.

If it's a Friday night there's a great pizza van with wood fired oven in the main square. Best pizza we've had outside Italy.

More moules than you could shake a frite at in Chez Delphine, and nicely cooked too. Better luck next time :)

(10 mins from the aire by bike.)
They must have dropped their stick last night because that's the place we tried:(

Seems there were two more funsters here last night , did see some stickers but no one in the vans, they must have been in restaurants, we had our usual excellent meal at au cap compass just over the other side of the boats, plenty moules there if anyone wanted them, but found that sadly the big black bloke that used to run it died in march and his widow has taken over.
By the way both the other funsters had gone when we got up this morning.
Hope they had a good crossing, we don't go till tomorrow.

We must of been having a walk with the dog- oh no - we're looking for moules and frites
We obviously when in wrong direction, went to Petit Phillip because we had previously been to a place before square but that was shut.:(
We're in our Hymer B584, had a 9.50 tunnel but changed to the train before, off to Old Mo's now

Either that or I ate the last of them the night before nom nom. :)

It was busy for a Monday night, which is always a good sign. The Palm Beach isn't bad, but it wasn't open.
