Just wondering if anyone knows what the overall maximum length of a vehicle, for example a RV and trailer.

Hi Craig,,, Do you mean the actual "Legal" length allowed on our roads,, if not it would depend on R.V. and same with trailer..

Got knicked in Spain 2 years ago at 14.5 mtr, towing a Brian James trailer behind the RV.
Only tried it once becouse of all the bad press re A frames.
Sold the trailer and went back to my A frame, never had a problem with that.
Had a few looks with the boat on the back, but touch wood, never had a pull.

Well I know that the maximum rigid length is 12m but I was just wondering what the maximum legal combined length of a rigid RV and trailer.

So if I wanted to tow a 7m trailer with a 12m RV then this would be overlength? I see that there are fairground rigs on the road that seem longer than this and sometimes triple towing. How do they get away with it?

Fairground rigs come under "showmans" and I believe had different use and regs.

How do I become a 'showman'? Is there any other way I could get away with towing a 7m trailer with a 12m RV as I only do it a couple of times a year.

just working on a fairground doesnt count.

you could always stick an "18mtr" sign on the back and take your chances.

I believe they operate under a special showmans licence and so are allowed

Have seen somewhere recently that max width allowed has been increased from 2.55 to 2.60m. Dunno where the grey matter is going.

wonder if this is what you saw.

Width

Dry freight trucks: 2,550mm.
Refrigerated trucks: 2,600mm (to accommodate 45mm insulated side panels and maintain internal load width).

Have found it now, in October issue ARVM quoted in Spannerman answers, ' Recently the maximum allowable width of an American Motorhome has been increased to 2.60m ' This is apparently an extract from UK road vehicles, construction and use.
Perhaps this is the answer to the ongoing question of awnings and some other bits being outside the 2.55m width of many RVs
