Don't miss the il de rey over the causeway from la Rochelle, it's beautiful. Site and Aire at St Martin's is good.

Avoid campsites in La Rochelle itself! Fouras on peninsula just south is good or Marans Camping du Bois 25 mins north is good- good base to discover lots of lovely areas round there and in walking distance of SuperU and canals & rivers and restaurants.

There used to be an Aire on the far side of the marina with a bus into town if you want it, very good for a short stay.

If you want easy access to Bordeaux use La Village Lac,which is close and has excellent
bus and tram routes into the city. You pay 1.50 for the bus which included your tram ticket. And once validated it lasts an hour.
The campsite itself is quite nice with clean showers and they speak good English at reception.

We have spent the last two days in La Tranche Sur Mer in a campsite Le Jard.
A very nice site with clean showers, good swimming pool and nice bar.
There are good cycle tracks all around and we are 400 meters or so from the beach. There are plenty of restaurants in the town and we had lunch at a
lovely one right on the beach yesterday called Equinox, which we would recommend.(y)

We are moving north today to St Hillaire De Riez.:)

Since 2011 therefore I'm not a newbie anymore
Had 10 days in Il de Rey in May/June, cycled over bridge to La Rochelle and also took the Bus. The Il is a great place well worth a visit - but could be choker this time of year

Do not forget to visit Rochfort just down the coast, another nice little city.

If you like birds, then the marsh nature reserves are fantastic, we saw an Osprey!

Enjoy your holiday!

@Cyclewalkbob we are heading to Il de Rey in September.
Can you recommend a site as we are planning to stay 5-7 days but often change our mind!

I had to do a 'double-take' when I saw your first picture. I now realise the sign on the ground is a 'No Cycling' symbol, upside down! o_O
