Dieppe to Le Mont Saint Michel (1 Viewer)

Hello everyone!

Well, after our maiden trip to France last September we have decided to bite the bullet and venture once again.

We are crossing from Newhaven to Dieppe then driving down and hoping to spend a day or two at Le Mont St. Michel. Can anyone advise on Aires or Campsites very close by please?

Our plan is then to travel south, possibly stopping at Le Rochelle, we would love to spend a day or so by a sandy sunny beach to relax...

Then down to Bordeux heading for Bergerac....

Any known good stopover or site seeing musts would be very welcome....yes please!

We did Le Mont San Michael last year and there are At least 2 good aires within cycling / walking distance that I know of ,more if you look at the bus routes .We stayedI at a campsite with a pool about 30 mins away drove to the car park and then cycled to the mount .This was the first week of the school hols last year as I've 2 girls 11 and 9 .
Get there nice and early because it gets busy from 12 ish onwards ,if your there by 9 you can be in and out before it's shoulder to shoulder and packed .
After that if your in the La Rochelle area go over the bridge to the Isle De Rae . Great beaches nice and flat ,great cycle ways ,nice towns if you can get there out of peak season you won't want to leave !
After that it's a short drive To Bordeaux ,but when your there head a bit south and visit the dune de pilat ,then drop down to Biscarosse and miziman and do some body boarding .
Whatever you do enjoy!

Dinan is a quaint harbour and I would certainly stop at Nantes. There is a great camping in the acsi book http://www.nantes-camping.fr/en/
and right by the tramway into the centre. A visit to http://www.lesmachines-nantes.fr/en/ is a must. Huge mechanical elephant and other animals. Great day out

At the final junction before Mont St. Michel, there is a campsite on one side and an Aire on the other. The hotel controls both and that's where you pay. Basically, the campsite has showers and toilets whereas the Aire doesn't but the Aire is really nice. Hold that about the toilets, they possibly do. I'm not sure of the cost now. There is also an Aire directly in the shadow of Mont SM but the private one only charges local tax on top of the charge otherwise identical price. Local tax was 20 cents per person

The Isle de Re is fabulous, the bridge over from La Rochelle is worth the visit alone!
Just south of La Rochelle is Chatelaillon Plage has a great beach and is a lovely town.
We are off to Bordeaux in 2 weeks. Like you starting from Dieppe.

I'm pretty certain @EX51SSS is describing the site/aire at Google Maps 48.613948, -1.507698 just before the 'strip' of motels and diners that lead to the causeway. We've been on the aire, which is an ex-campsite, and it does the job. Mont Saint Michel is one of the most commercialised tourist spots I've seen in France, verging on the downright tacky, but from a distance it looks nice. Be prepared for crowds inside the walls, but if you like plastic knights and wooden swords you'll be in souvenir heaven.

As for La Rochelle, there's overnight MH parking on a grassy area of the Ave Jean Moulin P&R, and the ticket price includes return bus trips to the town centre. You have to report to the ticket booth after parking to give them your registration number to get an exit barrier card.

For beaches I'd recommend the SW side of the Ile de Re. There's a beachside campsite with a lower cost MH compound attached at Bois Plage en Re (Camping Amis de Plage), and the beach is sandy. Be sure to take bikes if you go there - it's very bike friendly. There's an environment toll to pay on the Ile de Re bridge, whereas Oleron is free access. Other local options for sandy beaches include the Ile d'Oleron, and La Palmyre, and both are well served with aires and campsites.

Camping Au Port-Punay at Chatelaillon Plage is an excellent site!

Hi, On your way south of Mont St Michael ,is Fougeres nice aire bit of a car park type ,it's right outside of a really nice castle well worth visiting.
