Just want to say thanks to all the funsters that recommended going to Puy du Foy in France. :)(y):)

We did go and it was absolutely brilliant!!!!!!! Better than some London shows we have seen.
Some were so good we saw them twice - especially the bird show.

We met someone on an Aires that had just come from there and they suggested that we bought an annual pass at 80E instead of the 2 day pass at 55E as we could spend as many days there as we wanted and the motorhome parking was also free with the annual pass (usually 7.50E a night). You don't have to visit the park to use the Aires so you could use it any time.

We did this and spent 3 days at the park and 4 nights on the Aires - the aires was actually quite descent, roomy (about 150 places) with grassy spots and close enough to the park to walk in, although there is a free bus that goes backwards & forwards during certain times (we biked in). Water/waste is available, also a few electric points but I would think these would be hard to get!

TIPS : if you get an annual pass then you will need to get it together with a ticket to exit the Aires from desk 4 at the entrance to the park - you cannot get the exit ticket from the machine on the Aires - you can get this the day before if you want.
The headset that give translation for the shows is available from the information desk and even at 11E (for 2 headphones) it is well worth it as you get to know what the shows are all about - unless you can speak French when you obviously wouldn't need it.
The top show - Cinescenie - is held on Friday & Saturday nights only. Tickets for this show sell out a year in advance but we were told by some participants of the show who were parked opposite us that returned tickets go on sale in the ticket office before the show. We weren't going to bother but hearing the show and seeing the fireworks from our camping pitch it sounded fantastic so on Saturday night we went to que up at 7.30pm (show starts at 10pm) but unfortunately the queue was already quite long. There were only 40 tickets for resale so after queuing for 1 1/2 hrs we didn't get in and had to listen & watch the fireworks again from the motorhome on the Aires that night :( I would suggest if you really wanted to see the show then take a picnic & start queuing at 6pm - a long wait but worth it!

It has made us determined to see that show so we are going to book tickets for next year when they go on sale in October , fly to Nantes airport (1hr away) and stay in one of the park hotels - the package they offer is very reasonable. The tickets for the show are only 25E!

Glad you enjoyed it - we did too and will definitely go again. Now you are home and still in the mood get yourself up to Bishop Auckland to see Kynren, billed as Britain's Puy du Fou, and all the actors and animals performing there were indeed trained at Puy du Fou!!

This is actually the same company as Puy Du Fou. The people camping opposite us were Brits living in France and they take part voluntarily in 15 shows every year doing anything from being on stage to clearing up or translating. They say a lot of the proceeds of these shows go to charity (see here https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/w...e-park-just-gave-a-large-donation-to-a-pro-li).
They told us that a new park was opening in Bishop Auckland and several of the top people from there had recently been in France Puy du Foy and they had spoken to them. They had also been invited to the UK to see the new park.
We chatted them up for ages but still couldn't get any tickets for the show that night(n)

I don't believe it's the same company. There is clearly a lot of cooperation between them, but the Kynren web site says "Eleven Arches is the vision of one man, philanthropist and investment manager Jonathan Ruffer. Eleven Arches is one of two charities he has established in Bishop Auckland, the other being Auckland Castle Trust. Together, the aim of the charities is to establish Bishop Auckland as an international tourist destination, attracting visitors and investment which will contribute to the fortune of the area and empower the community." The founder of Puy du Fou is Philippe de Villiers, and I can't find any closer connection between these 2 notable philanthropists. I know the press have been calling Kynren 'Britain's Puy du Fou' but am pretty sure they are separate companies.

We have tickets for Kynren next Saturday and really looking forward to it.
As far as I am aware the British show is nowhere near the scale of Puy du Fou which is really brilliant and having been once we fully intend to go again sometime soon.

There are several shows inside buildings similar to stage shows, several outside ones such as the Vikings, knights of the round tables, medieval times - all involve the telling of a story but with fantastic special effects. Our favourite was the bird show telling a story but involving about 150 birds in it culminating with eagles etc flying low over the audience - it was fantastic. One of the shows involved being in a Roman amphitheater which held about 2000 people, we watched a story acted out about Christians & Romans which involved a chariot race of 4 separate chariots each pulled by 4 horses as they raced around the stadium. There is also an evening show at the lake where dancers & musicians "walk" on the water - again all fantastic. There are no rides or amusements so not really ideal for very young children it's definetly more of an adult thing. I would expect there may be more on YouTube ?

Went to Kynren last night and it was brilliant. Wouldn't normally recommend that people visit Bishop Auckland but this should be on everyone's tick list. We stayed at a tidy C&CC site at Hunwick from where it was a two mile walk down a Sustains bridleway.
