Had my Kia Picanto MOT`d,, flew through,, dont need one till March, but wont be here so got it done early..

Did you know that now, (not sure when it came in) your tow bar is part of the MOT if fitted "Not The Electrics"...

And if found to be sub standard and likely not to be safe,,,, They can fail your car..

So make sure it is bolted up tight and fixed to the appropriate chassis parts and not a home made one that is likely to fall to pieces,, if it is not substancial and you dont use it ,,, "Take it Off"..

I was watching the MOT being done and one guy was giving it some welly pulling and pushing and another guy was watching and looking at the fixings to the chassis,,

Hence my question to them "What the bloody Hell you doing" and he told me..:Sad:

And before any one says "TOW BAR ON A KIA PICANTO" it`s to take a small trailer to the tip with household rubbish..

Yep !!!!

and as Geo pointed out......if its a removable towbar, ie...RV towhitch...and has more than 3mm of play, its a fail.

as is a pitted/worn ball but the tester cant remove any ball cover to check for wear.oh:

so if its pitted/worn....cover it or better still, replace it, if its removable...remove it.

The RV hitch, typical yank 2" reciever jobby, and personally speaking a much better concept than the ball, ie more flexible as to what you can stick in it, inherantly has a fair bit of movment and is probaly best removed prior MOT, though I don't think I'm the first to summise this....

This was brought up a few months ago elsewhere ( thought it was on here but proly on the Blackbird forum ) ..
Apparently the testers are not best pleased as the words they have to live by say they are not allowed to used force to check a towbar ( or words to that effect ! )

Now that means we are all in a similar situation to the bike mot thing with no exhaust being illegal ( cept those that state 'not for road use' ) but should be no louder than than the original fitted equipment.. Which means it is really up to the ear of the tester .. No defining rules to go by

As I said, that means there are no real defining rules for towbar testing and is again in the hands of the tester..
Personally I would want someone to pick up the fact I had a dodgy draw bar on my motor .. Nothing more heart stopping than your motor suddenly going light and your trailer over taking you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last Trike i built i used 3 inch bore pipe and the chrome ends off of a VW Bettle,it passed

exactly...... but how do you define 'force'.

sitting on a burglars head to restrain them 'til the poiice got there would take no force at all but the courts would probably say it was excessive forceoh:

Perhaps hanging a burglar off your tow bar would be a reasonable test ?
