We are going up to Yorkshire to the World Ploughing Champsionships in September and thinking of spending three weeks looking about. Any suggestions of sites to go to and places to visit funsters? We like peace and quiet, sites with good walking for our dog and an occasional walk to a local pub - surely not too much to ask. Yorkshire is all new to us apart from a brief visit to York - not a good place for dog walking really :) Thank you

Three weeks in Yorkshire? Take your wellies and stock coats, you may well need em unless you are very lucky.

Seriously there are some beautiful places to visit offering a wide variety of terrain and in September you may well find lots of places devoid of crowds.

As we came from the Lancashire border I will let the true Yarkies tell you some of the best places to go but enjoy your trip

That may be a problem - not sure the Yarkies wants us Devonians up North :(

1 hour from York - Bempton RSPB the gannets will still be there with some large chicks on the nest. Flamborough Head hs some great coastal walks and scenery. LOcal pubs serve good foods. Burton Agens Hall and gardens nearby C16. Quite a number of campsites in the area.

Thal bi moor thun welkum mayt. Yorkshu is luvvly. Mek shua tha gets thi inokulhayshuns afoor tha sets off(y)

East coast from Scarborough down to Hornsea is nice. Bridlington has a nice harbour and you can take boat trips or just sit and have a beer.
10 miles East of the ploughing competition is Knaresborough. Beautiful place and you could visit Mother Shipton's Cave, Paul Daniels owned it when he was alive.
For walks with the dog and nice scenery I would go further East into the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Grassington, Bolton Abbey and Burnsall are all nice to visit. I think there is a campsite at Bolton Abbey.
Our school used to camp in Burnsall at the side of the river. It is a beautiful place. 2 pubs but not much else. Unspoiled.
Hope this helps a bit. As Fred Trueman used to say "Al si thi"...
Have a nice trip.:)

I know that the ploughing championships take place on the same Saturday but a run over to Scarborough for the GoldWing Light Parade which takes place from 8pm would be worthwhile. Actually the bikes are on display all day but the evening is when it all happens, the light parade itself followed by a fireworks display on the beach.
Another place to visit is the Air Museum at Elvington which is just a stones throw from the ploughing.

Err, I think you'll find that Knaresborough is west of York ;) and Grassington etc is even further west.

It was certainly West two weeks ago though I barely stopped there on my way through to Harrogate, which really was worth a visit, cracking town.

We've just come back from Yorkshire. The CC site at Grassington was great for walks (although lots of sheep around) and the Foresters Arms in Grassington a doggie friendly pub which does good food.
We also liked the CC site at Rosedale Abbey. Great walking too. There's a pub opposite but it didn't accept dogs so we didn't try it. Plenty of room to sit outside though.
We didn't like the CC Bridlington site. Seemed to be all fences and big wide roads and barriers. Also the path leading to the coastal path from the site entrance that was printed on the site map had a big new sign "no dogs, no access". We mentioned this to the warden but she didn't seem interested. You can walk along the road on the pavement for about a mile, then join the coast at the Ship Inn (A good Doggie pub)
The C&CC site at Scarborough was ok. It's a big site but plenty of room. You can walk from site along a public path (there's a pedestrian gate out of the site opposite it) to the coast path and a relatively easy walk into Scarborough North bay. There's a good doggie pub - The Old Scalby Mill and dogs are allowed on the beach at the southern end of the bay.
We also enjoyed the C&CC site at Slingsby. Nice and quiet, pretty good walking and a good doggie pub in the village.

A lot depends on your interests. Yorkshire is as big as Wales. There are moors, dales and coast and lots of market towns. Coast and moors Scarborough, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay to name but a few. We like this site http://www.hookshousefarm.co.uk/ overlooking Robin Hoods Bay and an easy if steep walk down to the bay. The bus stop is right outside with buses going to RH bay, Whitby Scarborough running every half hour.
If you do National Trust stuff there is Fountains Abbey near Ripon and from there its easy to go up to the dales. Pateley Bridge, Grassington, Kettlewell etc. All good for walking and scenery.

Anywhere I the dales, Swaledale and Wensleydale, some roads a bit narrow for motorhome though, Richmond is nice as a start point for Swaledale best if you have a car a scooter o a bike.

North Yorkshire moors and Helmsley or a trip on the Steam line from Whitby to Pickering.

York, Harrogate, Knaresborough so much to see and do.

Looked at the site at Slingsby on UK Campsites and there were complaints about a smelly water treatment plant - this put us right off. Did you find that there were any problems?

Since April 1846 but have always camped.
Plenty to do in York itself and crockery hill is only about 4 miles south. It's on the main bus route from Selby so buses will befrequent. Try and avoid going into York during rush hour as it is a very busy stretch of road.

Not going into York this visit - no fun for our Jack (dog on left)! Heading for the Dales for walking and pubs!

If you want scenery booze and walking
Hawes stay on cattle market go up to cheese factory and stock up
Ribblehead parking free in pub carpark if you eat in pub
Skipton town is well worth a afternoon walk around on market days
Most of pubs will let you overnight if you eat there during week just ask they can only say no
Plenty of wilding if you are carefull to not block gate in parking areas

Hi Landscaper, on a serious note the Old Station site at Masham is well placed for walking including 2 good breweries within stagger distance. The Howgrave Hall caravan site at Sutton Howgrave is in our village and is Ā£12 anight inc lecci and shower. I have been known to dispel the myths about Yorkshire folk and offer free beer to selected passers bye. You will find us easily-- the only Burstner in the village as the welsh say.
Cheers
Bernie:)

That is a lovely message - thank you. If you haven't got a sense of humour you certainly don't belong on this site!!!! All good fun :)
