Hi All,

As the proud owner of a Gaslow 'System' (Well, it will be when I get the filler point connected to the 'van, the pigtail connected to the bottle and the bottle filled with gas.) Ahem?

I was wondering what happens when the day dawns and the date stamped on the base of the bottle is reached?
What do you do?
Is there someone to contact.

Hopefully I'll still be touring in the 'van when it happens but as for the practicalities of recalibration, I haven't a clue.

Anyone?

It appears you exchange them for new ones and are charged a replacement fee but I'm not sure if anyone has got to that date yet as it's 15 years from first purchase and they didn't start selling them until 2004, so the first people will need to look into this in 2019:

* After 15 years you MUST take your cylinder(s) to your local dealer who will exchange them for new cylinders charging a replacement fee

So, if they knew in 2004 that there would be a replacement fee, no doubt the first peeps will get a bargain because Gaslow won't have an idea until they get a regular throughput of demand.
Yes they will know how many they sold in 2004 but that doesn't mean that all those bottles will be returned.

I read it as the cylinders are certified for a finite life span. Its unlikely they will be refurbished and recertified at the end of this though. technology and safety requirements have already moved on since the first of such cylinders went into service,
I fully expect you will have to buy full price replacements as the obsolete tanks will need to be scrapped by a specialist company

I read it as covering their ar*es. I can't imagine how they would come up with a 15 year life. If they haven't suffered physical damage they should last indefinitely.

I agree to a point except the float and valve will fail eventually. try arguing with an insurance company that an out of certification pressure vessel containing explosive gas is safe

Until last year I worked for a gas cylinder company. Their cylinders HAD to be refurbished every 10 years, certain ones less, but refurbished they were. They have a special place that vents them, they then take off the valve, fully repaint to whatever colour they require, new valve and new 10 year date. That's why, even the EU changed the colour coding of gas cylinders, it takes 10 years to complete the cycle.

My previous employers had a sub business line that used to do the recertification of cylinders

The 2015 edition of ADR allows an option to extend the period between inspection and test of certain cylinders to 15 years.

An inspection is a formal examination of the gas cylinder and its valve. This may or may not be carried out at the same time. For example:

  • A pressure test
  • A visual examination (internal at time of manufacture and at periodic inspection and testing)
  • A check of the marking and labelling
  • The correct operation of the valve (or an integrated regulator).

more information.. http://www.bcga.co.uk/pages/index.cfm?page_id=88&title=cylinder_testing

I imagine there are a quite a few with fixed LPG tanks that are overdue ..

This may lead to some confusion as it is saying that vehicles (and subsequently drivers) should be ADR. Now, whilst I have my ADR certificate as a driver, my vehicle would not be ADR approved and neither would other Moho's.
These are for the transportation of gas cylinders under the regulations and unless you are carrying above the 'limited quantities ' plus there is also exemptions all over the place for private use or using at point of destination.
I think anyone trying to read the regulations along with CDG (carriage of dangerous goods) will be particularly mystified.
As far as I can remember, gas has no limited quantities in the industrial zones but the overriding aspect is.... Private use..
In the main, propane cylinders are under very little pressure. Albeit liquid, it's a gas. The areas where ADR, CDG etc come into their own as regards Class 2 and class 3 and exceptionally class 4 with secondary hazards are subject to very strict EU regulations. Propane and mixtures with are generally Class 2 by transportation albeit that class 3 is flammable liquids but that could be the secondary hazard whereas the primary hazard is class 2.
The vast majority of people reading this and the 2015 regulations will be banging their heads. Personally I think quoting ADR regulations and CDG is not answering the original question.
I think the best thing is to contact your original supplier and ask when it's due.
I transported Class 2 for over 10 years and thousands of cylinders to and from the company's own refurbishment premises and never got a tug.
Incidentally, all cylinders that have had ANY gas products in are never empty but nominally empty just in case there is product remaining
The cylinders I transported were filled with pressure up to 300 bar.
Easiest thing, ring your supplier of the cylinder

the original question was answered perfectly in post #2 by @Minxy Girl .. and she gave the Gaslow link.. that should have been the end of it..

it was you who then said....

my post was to show that 10 year test could be extended to 15 years .. as Gaslow have done..

That's very true, I did add to the debate.
However minxygirl did answer correctly but are we now saying that once a question has been answered then nobody should have an input telling their situation? All I did was to have a input from a professional employed in the industry for a decade. It just adds to others enjoyment of the site.
At least it was an accurate portrayal as opposed to joking or tongue in cheek which can be hilarious and add to the enjoyment as I said but obviously in some people's eyes, once a question has been answered then the debate should be closed to all other offerings. Let's hope, as in this case, the first reply was correct and accurate as opposed to later ones.
So can we now not stray off the exact subject?

Sorry I think I got lost on the way. I was agreeing that your reply was correct but I got pulled because I added my own personal view and because I used to work in the gas supplier industry and they are refurbished (as opposed to scrap and renew) every 10 years. Sorry if it confused you because it confused me why I was criticized because I added a view but hey ho.
