Hi folks, Last winter I took my van from Scotland to Morocco and back. I covered over 15000 miles in the 5 months of travelling, however I can't remember my exact route. Is there a gps based app that anyone can recommend that works in the background and records your route. I like to remain flexible when I travel, pick up recommendations along the way and be able to take detours if I fancy so don't like planning an exact route before setting off. More go with the flow...
What apps do you use?

i say when going on a long travel like that write a diary.
note places etc . just been going through some of my old ones here with a friend thats sort of planning winter travel this year.
these day you can almost follow some routes on google earth street view .
some places have just been built over etc . but some parkups are still there even from the 70,s and 80,s amazing .
cant be doing with some modern things . dont use a sat nav . good maps still work for me .

Autoroute on a laptop with GPS receiver works for us.

Hi @Lenny HB sounds interesting to me. A couple of questions if you don't mind, do you need to have an Internet connection all the time, does the laptop have to be on all the time whilst traveling?
Is it a built in GPS receiver on your laptop.
Thanks in advance
Shawn

The cheap chinese sat nav will save your route if you ask it to. You can pick one up from the car boot sale at blochairn in Glasgow for £15 or £40 from ebay

That's fantastic, not sure whether I like them knowing where iv been but it sure is a fair piece of kit for tracing where you have been, had to get to it a different road than you describe on the iPad, you have to go to location, then location history, but all the main places we have been in the last couple of years are there(y):)

Autoroute is a stand alone program no internet required, although Microsoft have discontinued it you should be able to get a copy. Laptop does need to be on, we use a Bluetooth GPS receiver you can get USB or Bluetooth receivers from around 10 quid.

Not sure what detail you want but the excellent Maps.me you can record your route and its offline as well. Been using this allover and round Morocco for the last 2 winters, just go into the settings then map then recent track on maps me and you record your track and keep for 1hr to 1day and at the end of the day just take a screenshot of it :)

Amazed. Never knew it was there. One ? If I may.
Went out yesterday into the forest of dean for a jolly. Forgot to take android phone and only take apple pad if going away.
My route was plotted perfectly on the Google app, as I took a different route home. How?
The only other thing in the car was a garmin sat nav.

I'm guessing your iPad will be logged into your Google account.
That's all Big Brother needs ;)

I have looked into this , amazing, some places I went to two years ago are on it, but there are some I have never been anywhere near, from what I can make out if you have searched for somewhere, such as where an eBay item is on google maps , I think it puts that down as well.

Wow, that is some serious driving, on average 3000 miles per month, or 100 miles per day, everyday.
We too overwintered in Maroc then spent time in Portugal and over the 4 months totalled just under 7000 miles and I thought we done a lot of driving LOL. Incidentally, I recorded my journey in Maroc on a Michelin map by using a highlighter pen. Sophisticated or what LOL.
