Having searched extensively online & on this forum for the best solution to accessing Fon, free & campsite WiFi from our motorhome we have worked with Solwise & have now bought what we hope is the best current solution for us:

IMG_20160701_183928841.jpg

The above is what it looks like on our motorhome & the top can be rotated 360 degrees so no need to change position :) It now has a larger, stronger suction mount than the prototype one above (that one was from our car camera!) & the cable is attached:

IMG_20160708_130012902.jpg

Having 10dBi gain, being directional but able to fully rotate from one position & with a strong suction mount & all at a budget price of £113.84 delivered this ticked all our boxes. The repeater comes with easy to set up instructions. The only downside is that the back of the antenna isn't pretty as although sealed it is metal as it was designed to be wall mounted - we have removed the bracket but replaced the screws so looks neater. Solwise are now considering producing another version that should look better but it is unlikely to be available until next summer so posting in case if, like us, any Funsters need something now so this gives them another option to consider. Solwise have been going for 25 years & we have found their response to queries, help & technical knowledge to be very good.
If anyone already has a Patriot 5dBi kit then the swopping the top for the 10dBi antenna at £19.81 would be a cheap upgrade & the suction mount at £6.50 is a more secure fixing than the original metal bracket & suckers (y)

We have been quite lucky getting Fon in France and wifi elsewhere using one of these 16dbi usb antenna connected either direct to my laptop or through a USB router. It sits on a Status telescopic pole.

Actually using it now at home as we have disposed of our land line, getting plenty of Fon locally.

Does this kit have to connect to your laptop using a USB connection or does it create a WiFi link?

Ours above can do both, either direct into usb on laptop or through a usb router same as sold by Solwise which then provides a wifi signal for the whole van and immediate area.
Cheers

Many thanks, so it needs a router as well (for us with Android tablets) and presumably a power supply?

I am sorry, but since when has that price been 'budget' for an external antenna? Maybe I am missing something?
It is compared to the other options for similar products! The other one we nearly bought was a Funster favourite the iBoost at £159.99 http://www.motorhomewifi.com/product/iboost-d8-directional-system/ . Great looking product & after sales support but lower gain at 8dBi & more than we could justify paying.

As all the parts can be ordered separately from Solwise it is easy to upgrade (y)

I use a Leguand N120 paid about £14 for it, use it with the Alfa router from Solwise. Recently compared it with an iBoost, performance appeared to be slightly better than the iBoost. Only annoying thing is the aerial won't work with operating systems later than XP so can't do a quick signal check have to set up the finicky router each time.

Fon in France varies anything form so slow almost unuseable to blindingly fast, fastest connections always seem to be out in the country where you pick it up from a farmhouse or odd cottage always appears slow in towns. Tend to find the login page can be very slow to load often minutes but once logged on works fine.

Who is the original equipment manufacturer of the iboost equipment?

Ubiquiti and Mikrotik

Product Availability Unit price Quantity Value (excl. VAT)
Ubiquiti NanoStation Loco M2 - £35.70

MikroTik RouterBOARD mAP2n - £26.45

Ubiquiti Nanostation Window/Wall Mount - £13.84

Value (incl. VAT)
Value of ordered goods: £91.19
Costs of UPS Standard delivery: £13.72

Total amount due (incl. VAT): £104.90

Just add 2* cat 5e cables of length required, I used a Ubiquiti NanoStation M2 with a 11.2 dBi antenna gain in place of the Loco M2 which is 8 dBi.

That is from senetic.co.uk (who actually ship from Europe but I had no problems with that), they were cheaper at the time than from 4Gon and the other UK suppliers but prices change.
Setup is not for the novice but I found the following link helpful, http://www.outsideourbubble.com/sec...making-a-better-park-connection-for-under-100
I did have some screenshots of setup on both devices but as we sold the house last wednesday the server they are on is in the boot of the car as I did not trust that to be in storage whilst we look for a new house, yes we are now officially full timing until we find what we are looking for near Durham/Shotley Bridge area.
