Hi all.
Just had gaslow moved to my new van and the filler cap properly mounted in the body work so no need to open it to fill up.

The locker is quite spacious and I am thinking of using the space to store my EHU cable (in a bag) and a couple of bottles of green toilet fluid...

Daft question maybe but is there any reason I shouldn't?

I keep a bottle of blue and a bottle of green bog fluid in my locker with the Gaslow, and a big funnel thing for adding adblue. Seems a good idea, as there are the vent holes in the bottom and so if the bottles leak, they don't end up in the van..

I keep a hammer well wrapped and jammed so doesn't bang on bottles, and a tow rope in mine.

I keep about 20 cans of ex Russian Army issue anaesthetic gas in there for when I'm on an aire and the holiday money's getting a bit short.

Oops, what a giveaway.

We fill ours full of all sorts of stuff, being careful to not block the vents in the floor of the compartment. However, none of it can produce an electrical spark or have any form of ignition. IE it is all inert.

Look at it this way, if there was a leak of gas from your bottle and somehow it built up in the compartment you would not want anything to produce a spark at that point.

I am amazed that some vehicle alarm fitters actually put an electrical switch on the inside of the compartment door. If you had gas in there at the right concentration and you opened the door with the switch energised, then you'd be lucky not to cause an explosion.

I understand Dave N's point and you need to decide what you're happy to do yourself.

The gas locker in our PVC is massive so I put in stuff that isn't going to cause a spark and make sure it's secure so can't move around. On the base in front of the cylinders I have plastic grids (upside down shallow plastic baskets) to raise stuff about an inch above the bottom drop vents so any gas gathering down there isn't impeded at all, and make sure that there is room for any escaping gas from the top of the cylinder/pipes to be able to easily drop down without being hindered.

I do NOT use large material bags to put items in as they could act as 'balloons' and hold back any escaping gas so if I DO need to put a large item in a bag I use a netting/mesh type bag - for example the hook-up cable mentioned above is a prime candidate for a netting bag, rather than a material bag, as a netting one serves the same purpose but gas can't get trapped in it. I also put in my gas equipment such as spare small canisters for the suitcase stove and the stove itself (it has air holes/gaps in the case to prevent gas gathering), I have a small rack on the door itself for cylinder connectors etc (easy to get at) and a hook-on tub with hose connectors in, both of these have holes in the bottom and the contents are not tightly packed. There is quite a bit of space above our cylinders so I have an elasticated net fitted horizontally (the type that you'd use to hold stuff onto a motorcycle rack) well above the outlets/taps and kept taught - this allows me to store flat and light stuff there such as a narrow water container, funnel and short filler pipe with rubber end on for a tap.

Consider caravans with a front gas locker: they have excellent drop ventilation and no restriction on what can be stored.

When in europe I carry my warning triangles in the gas locker as it is on drivers side (nearside when driving on wrong side). This means I can get to them without getting killed. My garage door is the other-side.(y)

Perhaps you would care to explain how that could happen? That incorrect statement could cause concern to many people

Sorry Eddie, it is not an incorrect statement. This is my specialist subject.

If you have an area, be it enclosed or open with a concentration of gas (between it's lower explosive limit and it's higher explosive limit) and there is a spark which contains enough electrical energy in that gaseous area then it will explode!

That is why houses are reduced to rubble by gas explosions, a gas concentration occurs then someone switches on a light or a timer clicks over.

A standard 12v DC supply, through a switch which changes state, will easily ignite gas. Of course it rarely happens, but it certainty could in the right (wrong) circumstances.

I thought most alarm external modules were sealed reed switches ? so no spark.
