How do i find out the amperage of the alternator fitted to my 2007 Fiat Ducato Bessacarr E560.
I am looking to find this info out as ive been reading about a Sterling B2B charger for when i get the money to install solar i would prob fit a B2B charger at the same time.

I don't remember having to be worried about the amperage of my alternator when I fitted my B2B charger. I just fitted it but it hasn't been used in anger yet. Mine's an X250 3 litre and if the alternator needs to be replaced in due course I'll get the most powerful that will fit.

There may be a few different outputs depending on original chassis design use.
A minibus type van will spend hours on motorways etc so doesn't need masses of electrical power but a short haul delivery van May need starting many times each hour so needs to get charge back in the battery quickly.
Best place to find out would be Google with ALL your vans base details.

The part number should be stamped on the alternator, may take a bit of finding but easy to find the spec once you have it. Have you rung or emailed Swift or asked on their forum?

From what i seen from a video Mr Sterling done he said it was pointless buying too big of an B2B charger as your alternator would not be proving enough juice to use of the B2B's potential and you would be wasting money , mind you at about £280 - 300 for a 60 amp version i don't think ill be getting anything bigger than that :)
but having said that if my alternator was was something like 70 amp , then some of the 60 amp B2B would still be wasted as the alternator has to take some of that 70 amps to run the vehicle / wipers , radio , heater etc.

You might struggle to get near the alternator to see anything as its low down at the back of the engine on the offside with sub frames, steering rack, exhaust etc in the way!

I think the smallest alternator on an X250 is 90 amp most converters fit an uprated one I think the one on Hymers is 160 amp.

@Abacist i sort of thought this , but my plan was to lie below the vehicle and take 10,000 pictures of the alternator and hopefully one of them give me some info :D
@Lenny HB & @pappajohn thanks for the info , i have just went to a parts suppliers website and entered my vehicle reg , then looked for replacement alternators and it listed about 7 of them all were in the range of 110 amp >> 180 amp , except one that had no amperage beside it and it was like half the price of the rest.
So tip i would say min of 110 amps hopefully :)

Why fit a b2b charger if you are going to fit solar. The panel will charge both batteries and should the chassis battery drop just c/o on the panel to run off the cab battery. Works for me.

The solar panels would go in 1st as well at the battery upgrade , the B2b charger would be added then if needed , but at the very least the "factory fitted" charger would need changed.
I just like to do a lot of research and get opinions :D sure no harm in that.. (y)

A B2B charger is association with solar is a complete solution - especially if you're considering an inverter.
We had a Sterling 60a b2b charger in our Bessie.
The other thing to consider is if you need extra leisure battery capacity.

Why does the charger need changed?
Maybe because its only 10A and atm im planning on going from 1 battery to 4 batteries to be self sufficient as much as possible.

We are pretty much self sufficient on only one battery and a 100w panel, though not in the winter when we are only good for two or three days. I did look at an extra battery but the location and extra weight were problematic.

Our Bolero is same layout. Sterling B2B was first thing we added, then an extra battery (fitted in a new battery box under the offside bench). That proved good for around 6 days so eventually we fitted a 100w solar and find we're now totally self-sufficient. Also fitted a battery mate to keep the vehicle battery topped up when static. With this setup you shouldn't need to worry about the vehicles own battery charger, 10amps ought to be perfectly adequate.

As regards the alternator, when ours failed (nothing to do with B2B) the garage wouldn't order a replacement until they'd identified the unit actually fitted as there 3 different alternatives.

Good to hear about you experience with your sterling B2B , what amperage / model do you have ?
Also whats a battery mate ? is that like a warning device for your battery level ?
Do you have an invertor ? if so what size and is it just for the likes of hairdryer / microwave ?
So many Q's >><< :)

To my mind the B2B comes first as we move almost daily so the engine does its work. In addition the solar is not so good in the UK especially in winter but is good abroad in the summer. It depends on your pattern of use. The B2B is an easy quick fix with extra batteries and an inverter but the solar is a bit more work to get organised and plumbed into the van and the electrical system. Just my opinion of course.,

Not all year it won't
Nothing wrong with a b2b and essential in my view and the 60 amp IP68 unit is so small and quiet.

I would say our travels should be 1-2 days max stay at one place , hey that why we have wheels :D
So would you recon i should put Solar or the Sterling B2B charger at the top of the list ?

Andy when you say your set up , i take it you were meaning just your inverter ?
Is this your inverter ?
