Hi all, looking at planning our first motorhome trip to France this September and wondered if anyone could suggest a route that is not too demanding that we could cut our teeth on.

Planning on sailing to and from St Malo and heading south from there and would like to visit beaches and historical towns.

Thanks in advance.

If you are limited to 2 weeks I would suggest the Pink Granite coast and Finistere.

September is a great time for France.
We did West coast a few times, Rochelle and along the coast just down to Royan plus the Ile de Re and Ile de Oleron..
Mixed in aires and campsites.

September is one of the best months in France, to get decent weather get down to the Loire. Year before last we had temps in the low 30's in the Loire by the time we got down to Provance & the med it was only mid 20's.
As you only have 2 weeks don't try to do two much France is not a place to be hurried just amble about and enjoy.

Sept is lovely time to visit France.
We will be there again this year. Going to Bordeaux, Royan and Isle D`Orelon.
My tip is do not try to do too much and rush things.....France is a big place...and you can always go back.
Enjoy

Wow everyone has a different idea of what two weeks mean to me. We have only managed one 2 week holiday since starting to work for ourselves 25 years ago I would cover a fair bit of countryside in 2 weeks as we only stay for 2 nights at most in a place thats why we got a motorhome not a caravan. Nearly forgot to add have a great time France is fantastic in a motorhome and make sure you at least try the aires.

We always head off to France last week of August and into wind week of September...weather has always been great at that time of year...too many places to suggest where you could venture too but we do tend to mainly do campsites when in Europe...only reason being we gave yet to find a nice Aire

Cheers.

Hilldweller, where would I find details of the meet, would love to come to that?

Part verger is not far from twin lakes and I suspect you would meet a Funster or two there. You would definitely get a warm welcome from Frank and Lisa.

As you are landing St Malo area you could (whilst it is a bit of a long day) get to either in a day. The west coast route is largely toll free if I remember correctly.

We did our first motorhome trip to France in April/May and it was truly Moho heaven. We used Aires because we found so many lovely ones and just tootled about exploring and it was great. Driving was a pleasure and it was so nice to be somewhere so Moho friendly. You'll find you that you can do as much or as little as you like and that you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to places to visit and stay.
We liked it so much we're going back in Sept.
Have a great time

the weather is going to be the deciding factor realy anywhere north of bordeux can be cold and wet in september much the same as herei wouldnt make any definate plans untill the day before we left look at the 10 day forcasts and decide to stay around brittany if its good if its not then plan a long days driving to get you further south a wet brittany is no better than a wet cornwall
something we often forget untill we are there is a lot of france is quite high and therefore cooler

We are also doing France in September(16 days) but having done Brittany and Normandy to death (lots to see and do you will not be disappointed) we are doing the run down to the South of France, gonna smash the toll roads to get down there in a day and a half spend approx ten days there and have a more sedate trip back up.

For the better weather head south. Brittany's all well and good but it's like Cornwall, complete with Cornish weather. The further south you go the more different it becomes.

You won't find many historic coastal towns south of Bordeaux though - just big wild beaches backed by dunes and pines, and fairly modern resorts beside the sea.

Current favourite with us is Charente-Maritime, mentioned by others above. Basically the bit from Royan, Saint-Palais, La Palmyre etc (on the Gironde estuary) up to Rochefort and la Rochelle including Ile de Re and Ile d'Oleron. Plenty of beaches and history, and easy cycling on the islands. You've also got Parc Puy du Fou a little way inland.

More aires than you can shake a stick at as well..

@magicsurfbus, have just used the blue links in your post (above) to navigate to your Airetoday website. The general information on there is ideal for newbies travelling to France and the reviews of aires are first-class. We've been to France a few times now but are always pleased to glean all the information that we can for future trips. A lot of work must have gone into your website and we really appreciate all your efforts.

Get an Aires book and maybe France Passion they will give you lots of ideas of where you might want to stay. I wouldn't look to do hundreds of miles in a two week trip, maybe try and enjoy a few days here and there.

The weather in September can be quite nice, the beaches of Brittany are amazing both north and west coast, there is so much to see and enjoy. If your hell bent on covering miles Oradour sur Glane would be a place to visit.

Whatever you choose enjoy!

We go every September and with only 2 weeks, we still go down to the med. Well worth the clear, warm waters and lovely sunshine. We did have a bit of a downpour period last year but then you'd get that chance everywhere. We will be heading for the Frejus area for cycling to St Raphael, Frejus, Port Grimaud, St Tropez etc amd also intend to do some time around Aups. You can see lots and chill lots. We used to do Il de re and St Jean de Luz as they're both fab, well worth a go if you dont fancy heading right down south. We have tried Brittany etc in Sept but weather no different to here so we don't anymore. Either way just chill and enjoy :) .............. oh and don't forget an acsi card if you want campsites, saves us a fortune every year.

Thanks again for all your replies, booking the crossing this weekend and have decided not to book any sites and to wing it and see where we end up.
We never book sites, that's the beauty of motorhoming. Prefer campsites to aires as it's our hols and we like pools, sitting outside in our space to read or whatever. Aires are great just for a stopover tho.

Where do you find out about campsites in France? We are also planning on going in September and would like to use both Aires and campsites.

Go to any bookshop like Smiths and there will be campsite books in France - Alan Rogers, Michelin all do good campsite books for France - probably find them on Amazon as well.

Also Google ACSI which does is a scheme of campsites that do discounts out of season if you present them with your ACSI card - near to buy the books each year to get the discount card.
