More comfortable steps to bed... (2 Viewers)

Hello

My wife and I use the beds in the rear lounge but our grandchildren just love sleeping in the 'loft' the over cab bed).

The ladder is a nice lightweight alloy jobby but the rungs can be a bit uncomfortable on the feet. I saw a post somewhere recently on MHF about using seat belt covers to go over the rungs to make them more comfortable so I have been on the look out for 6 cheap set belt covers. However today whilst on trolley duty in Lidl for SWMBO we came across some of their floor mats (some of which ready use on the floor in the MH) for just £4.99. Ah! I thought, that would do the job, so purchased one.

It did not take me long to cut out 6 strips roll one around each rung and then secure with 3 large cable ties on each, ensuring that the clip bit is out of the way underneath. The photos will explain all.

Simple and easy and cheap. Now we await the arrival of said grandchildren tomorrow for them to try out the steps when we take them away in a couple of days. The new step covers do not get in the way when the steps are stowed under the over cab bed.

The other alternative is the foam you insulate small pipes with, just wrap them around secure with ties job done.

I know these ladders can be very painful on the feet. The last MH I had where I slept over the cab, I ditched the aluminium ladder altogether and replaced it with a home made wood one with proper carpeted treads. A bit bigger and heavier but much more comfortable.

Another good solution, I was going to try that but I found the rugs in Lidl first, otherwise this thread would have been showing the pipe insulation around the rungs.

Only thing with an alternative is whether it still stashes neatly under the mattress when the bed's stashed. Not sure a 'flat' runged one would fit - when we had ours we used to have to put the folding chairs we had up there when travelling etc (underseat lockers not big enough) so if you use it as storage - with something 'lumpy' underneath you'd probably wreck the mattress.

I suppose it's how lumpy it is, we have had the foam on for 6 years (just replaced it with new) with no problems.

I wasn't talking about foam round them Carol! hopefully that foam is more squishy than the bottom of the mattress anyway LOL (- ours in the Bessie was 'one sided' so we could turn it around, as it was symmetrical, but not over -) otherwise it wouldn't protect one's tootsies in the first place!

wasnt it ian the builder who came a cropper when the padding around his rungs decided to revolve and dumped him on the floor after running a shin down the ladder
