Hi All,
Recently while travelling through the above countries we noticed bright new gantries over the motorways festooned with camera type detectors, aimed so as to ensure nothing got away. Any ideas?
Also on Belgiun motorways we notices signs suggesting over 3.5 ton had to pay a toll is this all vehicles or just commercial. We are just about to upgrade to a 4.5 tonne van and don't want to get caught with Boris type ANPR cameras.
I looked on the AA website but the info on there looks quite old. Any ideas?

They are just for traffic flow. They have been around for a while. More chance of a ticket on the M25 on the way there

In Belgium
From 1st April 2016
All trucks over 3.5 tonnen must have a OBU.
They read the box and charge per Km.
Same system in Germany.

Had one for 5 years many moons ago. Now starting again.
Have noticed for years on French autoroutes that some gantries have over 30 cameras strechted right across the road. I have always presumed they were to do with traffic flow.

In France they where also for OBU for trucks to pay per KM.
On all roads not just motorways.
But due to strikes by the Frence Drivers.
The idea was scrapped.
Or that is what I understand the sittuation to be.

Germany are trying hard to introduce tolls from 2017. Massive price hike for vehicles over 3.5t.

However motorhomes have not yet been defined in the documents so who knows. Taking a longer term view anything over 3.5 will incur more and more charges around Europe. Mine is 5.3 at the mo.

I did notice that the old abandoned check points have never been dismantled. Wonder why?

The vignette only applies to vehicles under 3500kg.
Noticed signs on some Autobahns tolls for over 7.5t & saw some toll booths being build.

Sure they're toll booths and not possible future passport control?

My understanding was they have been trying since 2012 to make the system work but have now given up.
@Mel
Off topic Mel but I wanted to ask about private plates in Belgium . Can you get them similar to the UK ? Saw a couple whilst driving back one read 'Viper' , can't remember other but then I was passed by a couple of bikes last week one of which Had 'H1PPE ' as his plate.

Yes you can
Here is mine
You can have what you like( certain exeptions) up to 8 letters or didgits.
But between letters and digits you have to have a stripe that also counts.
Some one already had MEL so I just put the 1 in.
It now costs €2000 it was €1000 when I bought it.

I think the German toll starts at 7.5tonnes for commercial vehicles, changed last year from 12t.

Motorhomes and cars are currently excluded but go box system is unlikely as too unpopular.
