Have to admit don't know a lot about radio and tv so here's a few basic questions.

The cd part of our 2006 Hymer Sony radio CD is broken, plays for a few minutes and then is garbled. When we travel we travel long distances at a time and love to read audio books of which we have many on CD. Our first trip away with our new to us MH and an hour in and the CD packed up, so need to do something about it.

Found someone to repair the Sony and not too bad a price either, but as the Sony is now 10 years old thought maybe replace it with something more modern with an updated MP3 and other technology?

The original Sony is a CDX-GT410U and with radio sounds great.

The one's I am looking at to replace it with are the Sony MEX-N4100BT or the Sony MEX-N5100BT (to enable a subwoofer? to be fitted directly, would we like such a thing?).

Have 3 questions -

Are these a good upgrade?

Is it worth doing?

Is there a habitation battery power point already in the dash area on an early 2006 Hymer Starline 680? Want to power the radio from the hab batteries.

Is the radio cd body a direct replacement fit and is the connecting loom the same or at least will the new loom plug into whatever Mercedes/Hymer have fitted into the wiring?

Many thanks for any help

You'll be aware that as far as I can see your choice has no CD facility? CD is likely to be dropped by most manufacturers as other storage technologies take over. That said your existing player has USB stick facility which is the common replacement for CD - you could use your own rather than replace it. Have you considered one with DAB?

Don't know anything about your chosen replacement other than by reading the spec - which looks good.

Almost any unit will replace the existing. Halfords sell conversion connectors if one is needed but you are replacing one Sony with another - should be fine.

With our MH we spend more timer out of the country than in, so DAB isn't really so relevant. The spec on both the possible replacements have a cd player included in the specs although a listing on Amazon doesn't make it obvious.
Had been reading about double DIN connectors plus other things with some radios and started to wonder whether in the 10 years since the original radio was fitted if the wiring looms and general fitting had changed too.

I think just looking for a top quality unit that is basic and simple to use plus gives good speech and music sounds. These having LW radio too is a bonus when away from built up areas, both have LW.

You make a good point about using a USB storage stick in place of CD's, thanks for all your comments tonyidle

not had much luck with DAB on our radio
Aerials are critical but once it's sorted it is ideal when travelling - mainly because there's a seamless handover as it moves out of range of one transmitter & into the coverage area of the next. None of that fading hiss & staccato reception whilst FM looks for the next transmitter. In fact nothing at all - it's impossible to detect the transition.
