Hi everyone.
Bought a camper at the start of summer, 1.9td on a 1999 built van. Done a couple of thousand miles since, and decided that there is just not enough power to haul the van at an enjoyable speed or return much over 20 mpg. Are there any larger engines that could be fitted and provide a solution?

Thanks

Pete

:welcome: Unclepete to MH Fun

Never done it myself but I am sure that it must be possible, but at a cost.
There are some on the forum with more mech. knowledge, I am sure they will be able to offer advice.

Hope you get the answer you want.

I've looked into this option and I think that the engine is too old and is not remappable.
The data that I've found for it gives the engine as being:

Engine stamp:DHX

Version code: 230BNMA

Engine version:M12 1905 TD W3

Don't know if this helps at all???

Cheers

Pete

If so, that's hard luck. Have you actually asked any tuners ?

On the other hand, it can be good luck, no computer = dead easy to fix anywhere in the world.

The engine is the old 1.9TD.
Not spoken to any tuners, but can't find the engine on any of their lists of "engines we can tune".
Maybe a couple of calls would be in order come to think of it.

I have the same motor on my 2001 McLouis & have spoken to numerous tuners - Mechanical injection, no ECU and no chance seems to be the story:Sad:

That's what I thought would be the case. So the only two other choices are a new engine or a new van!
The engine would be the prefered route.

Dont quote me on this as im no expert

However I agree the 2-0 is well under powered for a MH. When I had one I looked in to the optiuon of a new engine. The 2.3 I was told would fit straight in and is more powerful by some way. However my van was a 2003 so i went for the remap option.

Although of course with a welder and a bit of artistry you can make any engine fit, the 2.8 is on 16 inch wheels and the 2-0 on 15 inch so theres drive shaft work to be done for a start.

like I said, before you go and buy a 2-3 make sure you check out what Im saying, Geo may have the answer (hes a mechanic you know ::bigsmile:) and Im sure might pop along soon.:thumb:

just checked on AUTODATA and your van should be the DHX 90 bhp engine.

the 2 liter engine....(engine code RFW) is a 110bhp engine.

both mechanical diesel pump engines but the RFW has a cat convertor.

possibly the same crankcase as they are from the same year and engine mounts etc may be the same.

now theres a very strange thing......

Autodata dont list a 2.3 before 2002 (thats when my disc data stops)

full list is

1.9D and 1.9 turbo
2.0 and 2.0 4X4
2.5D, 2.5 turbo, 4X4 and 4X4 turbo
2.8D, 2.8 turbo and 2.8 maxi and 2.8JTD

very odd !!!!

hi poster

I have this engine in one of my cars (and most before this one) :) its a great reliable engine, for 1300 kgs, if you dont really need to go into 3 figure speeds..

there isn't much you can do, it should be intercooled, but quite an old design.. 90Hp is about right, with 3500 kgs or so to lug about I cant believe it will ever quickly pull rice pudding skins ..

as far as tuning, you can allow the turbo wastegate to open at a higher pressure, say 15psi, and alter the [a] fueling screw to add more diesel in. this will make a useful difference.. at no cost at all.. expect 10-15 hp more

the only other good news, if it has a bosch injection pump, it will run happily on SVO or WVO (straight/ Waste veg oil) with no mods..

more info pm me or post

maybe Paul, but as mine is a 2001 it covers mine for what good it is.
very limited data and although it says it covers all fiat models from '73 to 04 it actually covers nearly ALL cars, ALL makes.

but then it was only a fiver from a sunday market...

sounds good stan..

the DHX is really the last in the line of XUD engines I feel..

one possible problem may be access to the fueling screw, it's probably tucked behind armour on the later injection pumps..

there will be an ECU although it does very little and can't be flashed over, as far as I know..
I think it operates glow plugs timings, is connected to no 3 injector and the engine light on the dash, and possibly changes timing during cold starts..

Thanks for all the tips. So it sounds like all I can do is get the pump re calibrated, and the turbo wastegate adjusted? Not all that well up on diesels, can anyone recommend anywhere that can do this stuff in the Manchester/ North west area ( I'm in South Manchester )?

Thanks Pete, mine is exhibiting the same symptoms, i'm gonna go down the route of

new filters, engine flush, new oil , check injectors and checking the turbo (which is where I

think my problem lies) first.

Bit worried about doing anything to the wastegate yet, i'd prolly bugger it up.

If I gain any info I will certainly pass it on to you :thumb:

Engine change

I have changed the 1.9 for the 2.0 hdi BUT and it is a big but it is a lot of work the gear box , exhaust , power steering pipes ,electricial ,clutch (fluid type) engine and gearbox mountings etc etc it is a lot easier if you are converting to the 2.5 or 2.8 engine non hdi
if you need any advice please email me on m300td@yahoo.com
