Just curious on peoples opinions on this one
If you could save £5k but the motorhome was 3 years older on a similar mileage and condition would you take the cheaper one or spend the extra £5k and get a new one?

I am sat on the fence atm, looking at whats on the market atm / recently been on the market in past 6 months or so there seems to be on average circ £5k difference between 06 and 09 models.

Rather depends on the actual selling price.... (£5k being 33% on £15k but only 7.5% on £75k)

It all depends on the make of the van. My preference is quality of build rather than in what year it was built. Have seen new vans that would not see 10 years life span in regular use and have seen 20 year old vans that will still be giving service in another 20 years time. Better to go for an older quality built than a newer sticks and staples unless you only want to impress the neighbours.

I suppose a bit like women; the younger the better........????? Just joking folks!
Joking aside, not necessarily true with women, and not necessarily true with motorhomes either. I hear lots of people complaining about how quality (of motorhomes) is not as high as it used to be, as Snowbird says.

Our friends here in France 06 was the last year Rapido made quality vans , after the the furniture quality went down to save weight. Not sure if that helps or confuses. I agree with Snowbird on quality .

I'm a new boy so speak from theory rather than experience.

IMHO newer = blingier and lower quality, with functional having gone from the dictionary

I'm with Snowbird on this but then we have a last century MH.

As for impressing the neighbours - huh. Luckily rural France does not go in for such silliness

you won't, 06 - 2011 is still 'newish'

you need to look pre 2005 to find the better build quality

Last year when I was looking, had a budget of around £45k.. but eventually only spend £20k on a 2001 Hymer.. wasn't impressed with the newer models within my budget..

Consider the engine specification , it might be significantly different over 3 yrs

2006 is strongly likely to be X244 after september 2006 this became X250 cab but time lag on conversions mean not likely until 07 plates generally.
Mercedes? no idea

Can't fault ours :)
We went French/France and moved up two years newer for less than buying in Blighty. Sadly, the man who gave us loads of advice is no longer with us :(

I'd be inclined to choose the younger van because, personally, I prefer the driving characteristics of newer models.

When we changed from a 2004 Ducato based van to a 2010 model, the improved driving experience was a revelation. Hugely better brakes, better steering and all round more refined drive (except the rear suspension - which although improved - is still a bit like you'd expect on a cart).

Younger the better ! You will decide the quality yourself and it varies from make to make anyway. To say all newer vans are lower quality is just not right all makes change over the years some for the better some worse.

Vans date so fast and the newer the longer you may be inclined to keep it.

Mileage use and how much or little it has been looked after all come into play. (y)(y)

It is a bit like a cart on the rear but simple is often the most reliable. Certainly specification can make a big difference as well, as does things like stability control.

Cheers guys, looking like search maybe more difficult thou as no sure I can get a rapido unless its on a maxi heavy chassis as I dont think 3700/3800kg will work with a family of 4 (inc 2 teenagers) think its gonna cut it too close for comfort.
Although an article in MMM April 2015 has a 881M GVW 3880kg with a 750kg pyload which would be adequate.

I'm with Snowbird, good quality outlasts newness, think of when you may be sitting with things needing fixing how long you don't have your MH and how far you have had to take it to get fixed.
If weight capacity is an issue uprate,I have just done it 3850 to 3970, to go up to 4250 I would need to fit air rear suspension.
think it through...

Cheers @John745 What chassis are you on? how did u upgrade from 3850 to 3970 seems an odd number?
air suspension does not bother me tbh as I know it may improve ride also
I am still leaning toward Mercedes and tbh auto's, only because I drive auto cars as I do alot of mileage and its soooo much easier in traffic and not having to concentrate on changing gears when I dont know where I am as I travel alot with work.

Hi Jagtazman, I have a Alko chassis on my Rapido, Fiat base with a 2.8 jtd engine manual.
The odd amount (120Kg) is because the guy I got to do the paper exercise said that was all he could certify without the rear air, was looking for 4250Kg, but decided to wait and see if I need that extra 280Kg or just live with the 120Kg.
The upgrade I used the guy that "MINXY GIRL" recommended (truckcon@outlook.com) £120 (see forums on the subject).
I too drive an auto car, but have personally found the manual not too much of an issue as most of the driving in the MH is long distances in top, only my personal finding.

I'm only repeating what the Judge would have said had he been reading this.
