We've decided we definitely don't want to drink the water from the main water tank in our van, so are considering fitting a second tap to the sink fed from a smallish (5 litre) water bottle and pump in one of the under sink cupboards. Has anybody done this before? And tips/advice?

Getting better month by month.
Tea and Coffee from the tank, but as we only like Cold Fizzy water for drinking plain or juice, we use bottled. But only Cheapo from Tesco(y)

If you fit a separate tap and bottle (tank) you have the same problems as you do with your main tank, of stagnant water and having to clean the tank and pipes every so often, so now you have two tanks to keep clean. Just use the one you already have and sterilise it once a year, it's never done us any harm.

Always drunk the water from the tank nowdays to prevent the odd taint I've fitted a cheap Whale filter in line with the kitchen tap.

Do you ever clean your tank nic ?
If so. What do you use??

Have cleaned it once mate when we managed to pick up the dreaded TCP taste after filling it up in France somewhere. It's harmless but makes the water taste nasty.

We used Puriclean which works really well. Now we've done it once I'll probably do it once a year or so.

We only consume boiled water from the tank..
Bottled water if we need it.
It's just our preference.

Our 2004 Burstner water tank did taint the water. Our 2012 model tank certainly doesn't. Although we still carry a 5 litre bottle of fresh water I don't we really need to now. We have never felt the need to sterilise the tank but I always empty it between trips.

there is more than enough chlorine in tap water to kill bacteria..

every time you fill up with fresh water you are sterilising it ...
Don't have a problem with the safety of if but depending where you fill up the minerals in the water can react with the plasticisers in the pipes and you a horrible tasting cupper a cheap less than 20 quid inline filter works for us.

To answer the OP, no I haven't done that so can't help. We buy 5L bottles and 0.5L bottles and just pour/drink when required; I am not DIY savvy enough to fit something that would look good and work . So for a 2 week holiday we will have 3 x 5L bottles and 36 x 0.5L bottles at a cost of approx. ÂŁ9 all in. Won't mention the sparkling water, that's a different story :). So, we never drink from the tank, always bottled water, even for tea. That is or choice so good luck with yours (y)

We were a bit worried last year when we went to Greece until we turned on the fist tap and you could smell the chlorine.

The water over here that we use to fill, is second rate and not drinkable. Not even for dogs. No problem buying drinking water :)

that is the net cost to you the consumer.. you have to add in the environmental cost and impact ..

bottled water is no safer and has fewer regulatory controls than tap water.. in fact bottled water can be contaminated..

of course there are countries that don't have high standards where either drinking bottled or fitting a Nature Pure filter would be prudent,..

Bottled water is a con. .. if someone had told us 50 years ago that in the future someone would selling us bottled tap water we would have fallen down laughing..

Strange you should say that Jim, it was around 50 years ago that a colleague of mine in the construction business in Kent left quite a good job to move to Scotland setting up a bottled water company.

We all thought he was mad but he is probably a millionaire now!:cooler:
