We have just found out that a new via ferrata had been opened on the north side of Sierra Espuña so we went to have a go. It can be done alone or with a descent down a gorge. We decided to do it all! It also includes two zip wires, which we've never done before but Martin has just sent for two pulleys so we can now have a go.

We almost had a wasted journey as the forest ranger told us we needed to have obtained prior permission from the Town Hall of Mula, but he then told us how to get to the start and drove off. So we continued.

The route starts with five abseiles down the gorge. Then a climb up the metal foot and handholds to the first zip wire. A short traverse to the second wire and then a descent back to the last of the original abseiles back down into the river bed to walk out.

Couldn't take many photos on the route as too difficult to get the phone out of my rucksack, but I could take some from the bottom of the descents and one of Martin crossing the first zip wire.

Hope you enjoy as much as we did :).

When you get to 60 is there a dramatic change in your willingness to chuck yourself off a high craggy spot and launch into the air whilst suspended on a dodgy bit of Spanish wire? Asking for a friend ;)

Via Ferratas are located all over Europe (except GB:(). Providing you have your own kit and experience most of them are free. Its usually possible to hire kit and/or a guide for anyone not experienced.

Have done a few via Ferrata in France and Germany but never had to abseil. Do you need to provide own abseil rope and do a true abseil or is it a Ferrata that goes downhill with safety line to clip into?
PS I don't think you,re nuts or else I would be too........

This one you had an option of doing the gorge abseils and then the ferrata or just the ferrata and walking out at the end. A 60 metre rope was necessary for the descents. We did the whole thing.

I will follow them up steep climbs, stumble downhill after them, follow them downhill at 20 - 25 mph on me bike bouncing and skidding on gravel and rocks, after nearly expiring following them on a massive up hill ride, but never will I trust myself the cling onto a rope with a shear drop underneath - never never never!
