we had our first winter trip this year travelling through France to Benidorm and the costas. We intended to go to Portugal but were a bit put off by people we met saying it was packed. Sites full unless you had a booking which we hadn't, and Aires full too.

Can anyone who has more experience than us, give us a better picture as we are planning to try again next Jan /Feb

From what we've heard this year the French went en masse to Portugal as a consequence of the Paris atrocities. On advice from their Government re visiting Muslim countries, the buggers weren't in Maroc in their thousands as they have been in the last three years.

We have recently returned from from Spain and Portugal yes aires are busy but I wouldn't let that put you off; we spent three weeks along the Algarve and only missed getting on a couple of aires which we had selected from Campercontact site both of which were highly rated on their website and we arrived late in the day. However you can always find an alternative, we did. We have been down to Portugal for the last couple of years and will be going down there again during January and February 2017. Don't be put off you will find it a lot warmer on the Costa del Sol and along the Algarve and you will always find somewhere to stay. See you down there next year!

We left the UK before Christmas and travelled through France into Spain where we spent the rest of December and into February. We had never been into Portugal before, but decided to visit at the end of February. We'd heard that it was likely to be busy for one reason or another, but the only Aire that was full when we arrived was Manta Rota, which is one of the first in the Algarve across the border from Spain. Since then we haven't and still aren't having a problem - we're still there! I wouldn't be put off at all in future.

We spent mid Jan to end of Feb in Spain, then crossed into Portugal, haven't been turned away from any Aires yet, but always move first thing and arrive at next one mid morning.

Currently parked in Albufiera Aire which is busy now, but at lunchtime had 20-30 spots free.

We too are thinking of being in Portugal January / February and are hoping to be there for New Years Eve. Does everyone celebrate it down there like we would at home!

We were there at Xmas/New Year a couple of years ago - and yes, they certainly do celebrate NY Eve, in Albufeira they do anyway. Huge stage at the end of the beach under the 'cliff' with at least one group, a DJ and several different singers, all rounded off by Auld Lang Syne and a firework display.

We were in Portugal mid Feb to mid March, then moved on to Spain only just got back. The more popular aires and sites get full but there is always somewhere & plenty of wild spots. A lot of people seem to start heading home beginning of March plenty of pitches available then.
