Been checking tyres today and two are 11 years old, the other three are 6 years old.
I'm replacing the two straight away but what's opinions on the 6 year olds ?
The tread is excellent and there's no cracks in sidewalls.
Is it a recommendation to change them every 5 years or is it the law ?
I await differing opinions.

They were not necessarily fitted the week they were made and AFAIK Michelin sell tires up to 6 yrs old according to Camskill tyres.

Having had 42yrs in the tyre industry, and having seen what I've seen along the way ,I would say 7yrs is a max.Internal casing fatigue cannot be seen ,tyres can look in mint condition but can still blow out without warning due to age .some just say what they want to hear:rolleyes: hope this helps.

The tyre's manufactured age will be on the sidewall - a four number code

i.e. 14 13 would be the 14th week of 2013

Andy I don't think there is any chance of Michelin releasing 6yr old tyres from their factories.there may be tyre distributors with 6yr old tyres in stock ,I don't know.

I'm pretty confident that the new Agilis that replaced the Michelin X will not last more than 6 yrs anyway as I predict that mine will need replacing at 5yrs @ 5k miles per year. The Michelin X did much higher mileages but the M+S Agilis is much softer.

Timberland
The British Rubber Manufacturers Association (BRMA) recommended practice, issued June, 2001, states, "BRMA members strongly recommend that unused tyres should not be put into service if they are over six years old and that all tyres should be replaced ten years from the date of their manufacture."

"Environmental conditions like exposure to sunlight and coastal climates, as well as poor storage and infrequent use, accelerate the aging process. In ideal conditions, a tyre may have a life expectancy that exceeds ten years from its date of manufacture. However, such conditions are rare. Aging may not exhibit any external indications and, since there is no non-destructive test to assess the serviceability of a tyre, even an inspection carried out by a tyre expert may not reveal the extent of any deterioration."

so when we are having new tyres fitted how old should we expect them to be, or more specifically should we refuse them if say over a year since manufactured?
Hi Dave if you had tyres fitted now the norm to expect would be maybe Nov.2015 onwards.we fitted 5 last week and they were 3rd wk Jan 2016.

Our spare on Elle was 17 years old but looked great, even when it was removed from the rim. Anyway, decided to replace. Now got the old spare to wear round the waist and have a good blow out at the local Indian.......:giggler:

We have now suffered two blowouts on our vans, changed my Looked Like New XC Camping because they were 7 years old. I've posted the Blow out Photo before, so check it out. The last rear wheel blow out nearly turned the van over. PHEW.

WOW, I just checked my Tyres having read this thread and two are dated 2005, one is 2015 and i cant see a date on the fourth wheel:eek: Should this have been picked up during the recent MOT? The MOT was only two weeks ago:confused:

There appears to be no legal age restriction :)

I would think the tester goes on condition rather than age. My eldest lads just had to put two new on the rear as they were cracked on the inside but the tread was as new.

I often see very badly cracked side walls when valeting vans. On discovery cracked side wall's I never put tyre dressing on as this can fill the cracks and mask the problem, often when informing the owner they say "it only went through an MOT last week". When I worked in a dealership it was part of my job to check over part ex vans, often the side walls looked fine on the outside but look on the inside and they were badly perished.

Yes my lads car is a 2010 little Chevy and the tyres looked perfect from the outside and rear, it was only the tester having it up on the ramp that made them visible. The fronts have been changed due to wear.

A couple of examples

The first shows how easy it is to confuse

But it is always week of manufacture followed by year
