Some of my early wanderings were inspired by Robin Lee Graham, the 16 year old who in 1965 sailed alone around the world. Whilst I got my coastal skippers ticket and yacht master offshore I never did get out of the Solent, preferring a motorhome. I wonder if anyone has the original book "Dove" or the follow up which I have never read "home is the sailor", In 1975 there was a film made starring Joseph Bottoms as Robin, I missed it when it was eventually shown on the TV, I wonder if anyone has a recording or DVD of it. My life has been inspired by the man and feel it time to revisit the inspiration.

And to think Roger we could be calling you "Uncle Albert"

My favourite Uncle Albert Scene :ROFLMAO:

A tall naval officer aged about 40 and carrying a naval officer's topcoat, and a wren have entered. The two naval officers talk to one of the regulars who points in Albert's direction. The two begin to make their way through the crowd. They are stern and officious. Albert has not noticed the naval officers.

Albert
All together now, Oohhh!

Naval Officer
(Posh voice)
Albert Trotter?

Albert
Aye, sir, ma'am.

Naval Officer
Able Seaman Albert Trotter,
late of Her Magesty's ship
Peerless?

Albert
Aye, sir.

Naval Officer
I'm placing you under
arrest.

There is a shocked murmur from the crowd.

Del
They're only nicking him,
look!

Rodney
What's goin' on?

Naval Officer
You will be taken to the
naval stockade, Portsmouth,
where you will await court
martial.

Albert
Yeah, but why?

Naval Officer
Dereliction of duty. November
19th 1941. While serving the
Royal Pacific fleet. You did
wantonly abandon your watch
duties. Thus causing the
sinking of HMS Peerless and
causing considerable damage
to the American vessel USS
Pittsburgh.

Albert
But...but...that was nearly

Naval Officer
The original papers have
only just been discovered
in the vaults of Admiralty
Headquarters, Singapore.

Albert
I couldn't understand the
radar, it's was all blibs and
blobs.
:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Naval Officer
Read the charges, petty
officer.

Wren
Aye, aye, sir.

The wren produces some official looking paperwork.

Wren

Able Seaman Albert Trotter.
You are hereby ordered by
her Majesty the Queen, by
the high Lords of the
Admiralty and by all your
friends and relatives to
have a very happy
birthday.

Roger, what a different life you may have led. Its strange the way it all works out. As a boy I was determined to go to sea and it was very simple to do then. Never did and never regreted it but often wonder what if ? (Have you ever read The Kontiki Expedition) the best seafaring book I've read

Cheers

It's strange isn't it, I did think that you would fit well on the bridge of some yacht sailing around the world  but life doesn't always put us where we want to be, but as long as we can enjoy what we are doing now, that's what matters. Hope you manage to find the books and the recording of the TV show that you are looking for. Sorry I can't help with either.

Am I missing something here - so what's the big deal with a 17 YO this week ?

And a 13 YO girl in the Netherlands - now this is a big deal, the courts have overruled her parents in allowing this because it will hinder her development - and we call the UK a nanny state.

maybe the 17 yr old did it non stop whilst robin did have couple of stops along the way and even changed boats part way through. 13 is too youg to cope with the pressures of solo sailing over a long period of time. Any parents who would allow it at that age are obviously not fit to be parents, they are glory seeking via the daughter and failing to protectect her. I have no problem with her being made a ward of court and just as well some protection is in place.

Snap Wildman. I have read that book over the years more times than I can remember. I do have a copy but would be reluctant to part with it. I also dreamed of sailing around the world, did the RYA Skippers course etc. Been around boats all my life and until recently had a 4 berth cruiser which I reluctantly sold recently as it wasn’t getting used since we bought the MH. When I married Michelle back in 93 I tried to get her into sailing but she’s just not into it but loves the MH, hence the compromise. Even if you’re not into sailing that book is such an inspiration and anybody who reads it couldn’t fail to be both gripped and moved by such a story. He actually spent 5 years going around the world, spent months in various countries and got married half way around! When he left at just 16 years old I think there was quite a bit of controversy over his age and I agree about the Dutch girl,13 is too young but I don’t think 16 is. I never realised there was a sequel and a film. Let me know if you have any success but Im not paying £180 for a video!

Sounds a good read, I will look out for it. I do like a good travel adventure Couple of weeks ago I finished reading about Rosie's 5 year run around the world, a remarkable adventure which started when she was 57. She started running after her husband died of cancer. Her website is here, Read it and if you are a male over 50 take her advice and go and get a prostrate screening.

I you enjoyed that you should read her earlier books when she and Rob I think it was sailed around the world in a catermaran on about £5, plus another back packing around the world, she is a lifelong adventurer.

That is a fair comment.

Though it seems heavy handed on the part of A State.

I am a Falkland Islander and remember seeing her there in the catermaran, with her husband and two kids if I remember rightly:thumb:
