So, planning my first trip in my new MH.

I noticed that the fresh water inlet pipe has some sort of dark build up. As it is 8 years old, I think I should give it a really good flush. Does anyone know the best way to give the fresh water tank and pipework a really good clean?

Also, what about the waste tanks. Not as concerned there, but would also appreciate some advise on how to keep them clean.

Finally, is there any point in buying 'specialist' toilet paper? it seems rather expensive.

Your local caravan accessory or camping shop should stock a range of products for flushing out the water system. It's a fairly simple process to fill up, add cleaning agent, leave for a while then run out through all taps (not forgetting the hot ones to flush the boiler as well). It is also worth buying a pack of purification tablets which you can drop in the tank for a few fills afterwards just to be on the safe side. We keep a packet of the tablets in the van in case we have to fill up with a water source which may be 'suspect'.

As for specialist toilet paper, never heard of it and never had a problem using the Asda regular stuff

What he (she?) said re flushing out fresh, though we don't bother with purification tablets. We find the best solution is liberal imbibation of alcohol does the trick

Loo paper, just make sure it's one that disolves easily and fairly quickly.

Hi,
I clean my fresh water tank at the beginning of the season with a tub of "puriclean" (I think) you dissolve this in water , pour it in and then fill the tankk to the top, run water out of all taps and then top up and leave it for a while before draining and flushing out. We don't drink the water from the tank but carry a small container for drinking water. Thetford sell waste tank cleaner which I use at the end of the season plus any time in between to clear smells. On the sink plughole we have a strainer to ensure that food particles don't get into the waste tank. Lastly we use the thetford loo paper as it breaks up easily and is easier to empty but I expect lots of people will disagree

I use washing soda for my waste tanks. Some recomend the solution that sterelise babys bottles. Can't remembetr the name as my babies left home with the Ark

Thetford loo rolls you must be very rich, I buy 48rolls for a fiver for the garage and it disolves like magic, cheaper the better:thumb:

Only downside is you can only use it once

Cheap plain unscented household bleach is ideal for sanitising the whole water system. About half a litre in a 100Litre water tank (put the bleach into the half-full tank and then fill) and then run water through each tap in turn (including the hot taps) until you can smell the bleach. Top up the tank and leave it overnight. Drain the tank and the HWS, fill with potable water and run all the taps until the chlorine smell has gone. May have to flush a couple of times, especially if you are heavy-handed with the bleach) and then refill.

If the stain on your filler pipe is organic ( ie stain or mould), the bleach should get rid of it

toilet paper......we use whatever we have in the house.....never had a blockage yet.

by the time its been in there a day or three its well disolved.:thumb:

thetford paper has to be one of the motorhome industries biggest ripoffs.:thumb:

Don't know about that but it made dam good tracing paper as a kid.
