In the event of a puncture its likely the tyre will separate from the rim and cannot be inflated so the kits supplied are useless.
A spare is the best option.

With a heavy vehicle if you run on a flat tyre for more than a few yards it usually wrecks the side walls.
I would never run without a spare.

5 years, feel free to ask me about the Carado!!
I used the spare from my previous van, exactly the same! Would never consider going anywhere without one.

First thing I did was order another alloy for mine and make a bracket in the garages for it. If you fit them underneath they get filthy, you cannot keep your eyes on the pressure, the are also much more secure. There are some that just carry a tyre as most have breakdown cover. It means that the garages do not get away with selling you two tyres because they cannot get the same as your other ones.

It might get filthy behind the axle but certainly not in front.
Fitted nearly 3 yrs ago and still looks like this

I carry a spare tyre and wheel, combined weight is 25 kgs, just trying to decide if I should leave the jack at home as I wouldn't want to lift the van with it (n) I pay for breakdown cover so they can fit it (y)

Good point. I have always carried a spare but do I need the Jack and handle. I'd call out the breakdown services and If really stuck my Mrs can hold up the van whilst I change the wheel.....:wasntme:

I agree about letting your emergency service deal with it but I've never had an issue with the jack and mine is a heavy van. I use it for all my maintenance work

It's just a matter of taking spacial care that the foot of the jack is directly below the jacking point and not on a skew and that the van cannot move. If it's to change a wheel I put the flat under the chassis rail while I put the spare on just to be sure it cannot hit the ground if there is a failure.

I also have no problem cracking the wheel nuts with the supplied kit

I would need the breakdown services as my spare is on a steel wheel whereas my wheels are alloys and I believe different nuts are required, but I don't have any.
Perhaps I should just carry the spare tyre without the steel wheel :cautious:
OK, agreed. Back goes the jack, but out goes the Wife...It's one or the other in my old van! :hi:
Old Soldier, don't tell your wife that or it may be you who gets left behind ;)

where would be the best place to get a spare from
Openo do good deals on wheels with tyres.
I believe different nuts are required, but I don't have any.
The shoulder angle is different, you must not use bolts for steel wheels on alloys but you can get away with bolts for alloy wheels on steel wheels certainly OK to get you home.

I have looked at Fiat fitted alloys and the bolts are the same

What a brilliant reply, We bought our van last september and i have located the spare and checked the pressure, loads of room to get underneath to change! The wife would call the r a c but i will sort it out myself if i need to, its a bloke thing.(y)

On my last van as it was a special edition Hymer (X250) wouldn't factory fit Alloys so dealer had to do it, dealer used bolts for steel wheels, I had to go back to get correct bolts fitted. You may be right about the taper I do remember the bolts for alloys were longer probably because alloy wheels are thicker and not safe to use the shorter bolts.
