Buying brake parts for X250's and fitting guides (1 Viewer)

I intend replacing my front discs and pads before the next MOT as soon as the weather improves.
I'm amazed at the number of variations in specification there are for these vehicles.
Even with the VIN number I imagine mistakes are made but you can narrow it down yourself with a bit of logic.
Clues to finding the correct disc

Year and engine size/output
Wheel size & type...... 16" steel there are versions for alloy and 15" too
Hole centering diameter 79-80 mm will be 73mm for 15" wheels
Disc diameter 300mm can be 280 or other
pitch circle 130mm can be 118
For heavy axle can be lower weights

I could probably pay £80 or more per disc from Fiat PLUS Vat
or I can pay £23 from buycarparts

It's like when my DPF sensor was faulty.... Once you start searching the web you find the same part on various vehicles but at many different prices ! Buy part X for a Fiat and it's one price, buy same item with another part number for a Peugeot and it can be cheaper !!
Shop around all the time...

I bought Mintex discs and pads for my X230 off eBay for a good price and your right about all the different sizes for discs and pads, I was lucky as I could take mine to bits and check everything before ordering as I wasn't going to use the van.
I did have a problem with the pads squealing but emailed mintex and they sent me some anti squeal pads free, even offered to send someone out to sort it if they didn't help, but they did so a good.

Spend £40-£50 at a local TRADE parts supplier and get em right first time and no wobbles with crap run out tolerances either
The chocolate Chinese ones are ok if your SELLING THE VAN SOON

I've usually spent the extra and got the dealer parts or a reputable aftermarket part.. IMHO it's worth it...
Have fitted cheap parts from the discount stores and they in most cases just don't last..
Did a similar job on the transit mk7 last year... I hope yours are easier lol... The front discs were a pig to get done..

I've not had any rubbish from buycarparts and they have confirmed I chose the correct parts, which have a RRP of over £100 each btw
I have been given the wrong parts buy Andrew pages and Eurocarparts in the past. Notably before Xmas when my alternator failed Eurocarparts were frustratingly rubbish

A throttle valve can be over £300 from Fiat or you can just buy it in the manufacturers box instead of a £150 Fiat box

Vaico BTW are not cheap Chinese but cheap well made German and there is every likely hood that their parts end up in Fiat boxes

I've now done what works every time. Depart from buycarpart website and ignore until you get the 5% discount email
So I've now got all the parts for under £100 inc delivery from Germany

EDIT. you do of course have to register and put them in the basket first! then close the web page

Entering my reg number on Eurocarparts brings up the choice of four discs so completely unreliable unless you know what you are looking for. Only one of those is actually suitable for my vehicle.
The Pagid brand is the only one that meets my vehicle requirements and £54 each

I've been to several motor factors and they ask for reg no. and no match comes up, so end up doing it with chassis type and weight.

This is the set of pads I got from over the counter at a motor factors nearly three years ago having given them the vehicle details.
They look ok don't they? but the retaining clips on the top row were the wrong size. Fortunately the original ones were in excellent condition so it didn't stop me doing the job.

Yes I bought them for the wife's Pug 207, came to £63 for both front discs & pads. The original discs were an advisory at the first MOT so they don't last long. Fortunately it is less than an hour as a DIY job and PAGID are plenty good enough.
With modern day machining I don't think wobbly discs are an issue but poor quality steel can be.
I think that the discs are more sacrificial these days and only expensive if bought in the vehicle assemblers packaging.

I had a quick look at my front brakes today in preparation and can confirm the parts are correct.
I would have gone ahead and fitted them but for the lack of a 14mm 1/2" drive allen key to remove the caliper

Be aware Andy those 14mm allen bolts that hold the caliper on are treated with a thread lock compound and need a LOT of effort to remove, I have found warming the area up quite a bit with a blow torch helps to soften the thread lock.

I agree with Dave, the caliper carrier bolts are very tight, I tried an impact wrench with no success and ended up heating with a blow lamp.

I just use a very long bar
The big mistake is not have the hub turned outwards before jacking up so being restricted by the wheel arch
For diy with limited resources I only jack one side at a time so it's not a good idea to be turning the steering with one wheel still on the ground

Now I've ascertained the diameter of the rear discs 300mm too but 280 is also used on these, I have just ordered the same brand and Brembo pads again. The rear is quite a bit more expensive than front at near £140

I'm glad I've waited so I can do all four wheels with the luxury of E&P hydraulic lifters oh and replace the sump pan and oil too.

Andy what millage have you done? I thought discs last 70 to 100 thousand.......although I suppose thats going to depend on brake use.I am going to do my pads this year (not worn 16000 miles but getting old 2006) so look forward to another of your informative photo/how to do instructions.

The rear are original pads at 48k and the discs still passed the test but if I change them now it'll be another 8 years before I pay someone else to do it next time
Front pads I did three years ago but again I want new discs so I don't have to think about for a long time ahead.
Front has cost less than £100 so it doesn't bear thinking about
For jacking I only need press two buttons and all the wheels are in the air

I could just fit new pads but long term there's no point putting new flat pads on old worn discs
With yours being such low mileage l doubt your discs are worn enough to warrant replacing but I agree you ought to change the pads due to age and you may well find they are in a poor state
